If Churches begin to lose their followers, will there be less aide given to poorer third world communities... and if so, how will we meet the need to plug the gaps?

I tend to look at it this way. Without God/Religion there will be less suffering in the world. If anything people silly religious beliefs cause hunger and poverty. Like some of the problems in Africa right now. They are about one group of people who think there way of life/god/religion is the best way of life and they kill/occupy/starve others into extinction. Most places have food to some degree or another. In many places where it is scarce it is do to out side oppression from some fanatical group of people. The hunger in Somalia, the problems in Sudan, Congo. It is high time they did us all a favor and fast themselves out of existence, leave the food for those of us who are here on earth 100% of the time. P

hey, randy! My hubby and I pastored several Pentecostal churches many years ago and were brought up in church all our lives. The emphasis seems to be on missionary work and conversion---for example, we would sponser a missionary family working in a third world country. The money would go to this family to pay for their living expenses while they preached and founded churches. The real money to third world countries seems to come from other sources, such as Hollywood and music industry stars doing marathons. Millionaires like Gates and some others give a lot of money as well. So to answer your question, there may be a little less aide to these countries if the religions go under---but not enough to cause any huge gaps in the humanitarian work you mentioned.Thank you for an intelligent question!

I realize a lot of Christians believe that if you are a non-believer you have no morals and care nothing for your fellow man, but it's not true. I have been a non-believer for more than thirty years, and I regularly donate to charities and volunteer for various humanitarian organizations. And I believe that the same percentage of non-believers will continue to donate as the percentage of Christians who do now. Besides, think of all the money that will be freed up for other charities when people aren't tithing any more.

Are you kidding me? Do you seriously thing that Thiests are the only ones who give humanitarian aid? The difference between Thiests and Athiests/Agnostics giving humanitarian aid is that Athiests/Agnostics don't need a reason to help others out, we just do it; and we don't rub it in peoples faces afterwards.

I think there is a lot of aid given to third world countries by Christians - unfortunately it often seems to have strings attached. Much of it is conversion attempts - is that really 'giving'?

No. Western Europe is mostly atheists and agnostics by this point, and they give far more to charity than the United States does.

No. Consider the Gates effort; there are billions of dollars involved, and religion has nothing to do with it.
