I heard dogs make people happier and even help the sick get healthy faster. Is this true? If so, what kind of dogs can help? My mom has been mildly depressed all her life, and I want to change that. I am there for her as much as I can be, but will a canine also help? Thanks.

Well we live in the same home so me and my sister can take care of it. And actually, my mom is not up for getting a dog lol. But I know that if I get one she will be really happy.

dogs do help people with depression, but before you get your mom a dog, you must be sure that she has the time and willingness to care for it. Dogs can tie people down since it's hard to take off for a day, or longer, because dogs need to be fed. They also need to be cleaned up after and do shed their hair which can be messy.
Having said all this, I got my mom a corgi (it turned out to be a snappy wee thing, but they loved each other.) and it was great for her. I did not get a puppy, house training is a pain in the neck, and there a lots of dogs who are just a few years old who are very loving and need to be rescued from the pound.
Dogs make great, non judgmental, companions and are usually empathetic.

Dogs or cats *& ,many animals help people with medical issues of all types
Just make sure someone will be around to 'help' mum look after it -- & maybe involve her in the choosing of the pet so she bonds more ??
I reccomend going to the local pound & saving a life - you may not get a 3 month old puppy but dogs there REALLY need homes & are truelly thankful to be rescued plus a puppy may be alot of work for her & you - some people cant handel over hyper dogs

Before you just go and get a dog for your mom, make sure that she's for the idea too. Take her to a shelter and hang out with different dogs in the visitation area. That's the best way to see if a dog may help her in some way and what dog she connect with the best.

I'm certain your mom did care about your canine, however probably she would not understand how you can take care of her possess agony concerning the dog's passing. Maybe she does not want a canine for the reason that it's too soon for her and no longer given that she does not need to be troubled with one. Does your college have a counselor? Would your mother and father be inclined to take you to a therapist? You need to talk to anyone about how you are feeling in order for it to get higher. It feels like you could have taken your canine's dying (understandably) very difficult and is also depressed. It is nothing to be ashamed of, however it's anything that desires to be mentioned and handled earlier than it gets worse. Please speak to any person about how you suppose and i am hoping you might be doing better quickly. BTW, I misplaced my akita Sept. Of 2007 and i nonetheless cry about her now and again.

A dog would be a great idea. Go to your local shelter and they can match you with a dog that would be good for your family. I have 3 dogs and they help me get through difficult times in my life. Good luck and it is very nice of you to think of your mom.

YES! When anyone in my house is sad, my scottish terrier walks up to then and nuzzles them and falls asleep on their lap. I think that something medium sized thats not all that fussy. Retreivers are nice but theyre HUGE!! I really dont have any suggestons on breeds of dogs but you should definately get one. Or just bring her along to look at all the dogs and see if one of them really calls out to her. See what type of personality she likes in the dog. Best of luck finding a puppy!

I know this is a strange answer for the dog board, but honestly, a cat might do even better since it requires less work and cuddles just as much. I'd check out your local shelter for an adult cat so she doesn't have to worry about housebreaking it. Definitely have her come along so she finds just the right one she clicks with.
Good luck!

Absolutely - we did that twice for my mom, and the having to look after a dog gave her a whole new lookout on life.
Be realistic though, it's not a solution in itself, she will need some form of therapy, but along with therapy, it works wonders.
Best of luck.

pet therapy is great but will she feel up to taking it out when it needs to go and if its not already trained, is she up for that. A cat was my pet of choice, they go to the bathroom without help, just keep box clean and change once weekly. and they are quieter and want petting sometimes but not constant- i dont want something i have to deal with when i dont feel like getting out of bed.

You should consult with her physician. If so, get a therapy dog. One who is well trained and can provide companionship
