Hi Sara,
If you believe in the Christian God then i would suggest that he knows you very well because he made you and you are his 'child' (we are all children of God)... so He knows what sort of person you are, He knows that you are not perfect, He knows that you try very hard to do your best and that sometimes you struggle and find life hard...
We are all human, and God knows that... all God would want you to do is to try the best that you can... he wouldn't expect you to keep every promise you make, and he already knew that you weren't going to keep that promise!
A Christian God (from what i understand of Jesus) would want you to 'love you neighbour', which means to show compassion and kindness to all of the people who you meet in life... and also to 'love your God with all your heart' because He is your 'Father' and he wants you to stay close to him... that is what Jesus said God wants from us all.
God doesn't need you to prove yourself to him... he loves you as you are because you are his child... he just wants you to strive to be a compassionate and happy person.

If you don't believe in the 'Christian' God, then i don't know which God you are asking about, but i would suggest that any God is 'all-knowing' and knows you before you know yourself... make the most of your life and strive to be happy, then you can help other people be happy.

Hope this helps a bit,
All the best,
Zag

Hmmm...you say you're not "religious" but are "spiritual." It's usually religious people who have guilt problems; spirituality is less about "rules and regulations" (the things that make you feel guilty) and more about the things that keep you feeling connected and whole. Making a promise to God..isn't that sort of like making a promise to yourself, like a way to improve yourself in some way, to be a better person? So 1) you must be someone who wants to better herself so that's positive 2) we're all just practicing - no one is perfect - you just learn from your mistakes 3) (probably most important) Guilt is not going to do anything positive for you. It's disturbing yourself on a deeper level than probably whatever it is that you did.
You don't have to make promises. Just do your best, and I'm sure you're doing that.
Peace.

We all make promises to God and break them. Most of us do feel guilty for it. The best thing that you can do is ask for forgiveness and forgive yourself and start over. If you feel the need to prove to God that you are sorry and that you want to change your ways, start reading your bible and obeying His will for your life. It is good to be involved in church for the sake of being around other christians. It gives you people to talk to, strength and encourages your faith. There are still alot of people that don't go to church and still have a relationship with God. I would pray and seek Him and start over in your christian walk and let His grace and mercy cover your guilt and make things right. I would make a note to try not to make promises that you can't gaurantee to keep.

Matthew 5:33
Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD'

God will fix this if you let Him and when he does you will feel alot better. It will take a burden off of your heart. He is waiting on you !

I do not know what your promise was but I can guess. You can continue to suffer guilt and shame as long as you want to. On the other hand you can believe that God is forgiving and the source of conviction before the fact not after the fact. Which do you prefer. Choice is yours.

You don't need to prove anything, God is in you and you are in God. He knows your every thought. He is not a judgemental God. Hopefully you have learned not to make promises you can't keep, ha, ha. God Loves You.

you acquire a component, Mani. human beings tend to blame God because of the fact we are scared to stand the actual incontrovertible fact that those are all results of our judgements. besides, i've got faith those with the help of nature are stable. all of us are stable. yet those detrimental happenings are many times all guy-made. God gave us education for I constantly refer because of the fact the Noble Qur'an.. and God gave us the sense of determination making. while ultimately confronted with 2 alternatives, to do stable or to do undesirable, it somewhat is frequently been us.. our judgements, our determination and we would desire to constantly take duty of the outcomes it motives. Even the failings given to us as tests or trials that are previous our administration, that's nonetheless our determination a thank you to respond to it in the tip. (a million) "How can He enable us to try this to a minimum of one yet another, (2) and could He ever forgive us for what we've finished." What I stated in this assertion is that it by some means contradicts itself. the 1st area of it claims that those are all made with the help of God, however the 2nd line admits it somewhat is us who did it. Verily, in straightforward terms ALLAH (s.w.t) is attentive to what's superb for each individual and we would desire to constantly constantly save on with Him no count what to verify that us to be on the suited course, Insha'Allah :)
