The cause of death in crucifixion is usually suffocation. The nails in the hands and feet don't kill the condemned right away, and the Jews didn't want to leave anyone hanging during the Sabbath, so in order to speed things along, the Romans would break the legs of the crucified. As soon as this is done, they can no longer lift themselves up to take a breath and they die. But when they came to Jesus, he was already dead.

He might have... after all of that abuse it's highly probable that he'd broken a rib or something.

According to the guy who came to my school with the copy of the shroud of turin (right, great reason to believe him or me, I know) there was "evidence" on the shroud that led a coroner in the 70s to point out a broken kneecap, several broken fingers, a broken nose, some broken ribs, and a fractured cheekbone, plus some chipped bones in the wrists and ankles where the nails were driven through. And most people had their legs broken by the romans if they were not dying, because if you can't push up even a little bit, the suffocation goes faster.

Now I think that is pretty crappy evidence but surely if you go through all that you're going to have some broken bones... but the reason that the bible says not a bone was broken is because that fulfills an OT prophecy about Jesus being a symbol for the temple.

The human foot contains 26 bones. They are fairly well compacted together. It would have been extremely unlikely that Jesus could have had huge nails driven through both his feet without a single one of those bones getting broken.

Jesus not getting any of his bones broken supposed fulfills a "prophecy" in Psalms:

Psalm 34:20
“Many are the afflictions of the just man; but the Lord delivers him from all of them. He guards all his bones: not even one of them shall be broken.”

Of course, there is no real reason to see this Psalm as actually being a prophecy. It doesn't state or imply that it is a prophecy. (A lot of the so-called prophecies in the Old Testament that Christians claim were fulfilled by Jesus don't really have anything to do with prophecy at all).

Beyond that, even if it WAS a prophecy, it was obviously NOT fulfilled by Jesus. The Psalm states: "Many are the afflictions of the just man; but the Lord delivers him from all of them". However, Jesus supposedly suffered a heck of a lot of afflictions, even if he did manage to get by without broken bones. He wasn't "delivered" from them - there weren't any rescue squads that came and saved him from the whippings, beatings, and crucifixion. Even after his resurrection he still had wounds in his hands, feet, and side. Jesus was not delivered from all of his afflictions, so he obviously did not actually fulfill this supposed "prophecy".

In previous testomony rituals , lambs have been sacrificed via halal technique. in this the sacrificial animals` throat replaced into slit with out reducing the bones interior the neck. Jesus who's whilst in comparison with this Lamb and not utilising a blemish additionally replaced into crucified as an eternal sacrifice for each man or woman`s sins. lots so no bone of Jesus replaced into broken .

The Christian church there was trying to show that Jesus was an unblemished sacrifice, because the animals used for the sacrifices at the Temple in Jerusalem HAD to be unblemished or they couldn't be used.

And according to Christianity, Jesus was supposed to be the final sacrifice offered for the sins of all mankind.

However, just because his bones were not broken doesn't mean that he was unblemished. He was beaten, bloody, ripped, and torn. This would have disqualified ANY animal from being used at the sacrifices as being completely unfit for that purpose.

Let alone the fact that he was a human being, and a human virgin blood sacrifice for sin is an abomination. There is nothing like this in Judaism as the role for the Messiah whatsoever.

Hope that helps answer your question.

Cause it was prophesied that the Messiah was not going to have any broken bones. For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, " NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN."

The passage was prophesied in

Exodus 12:46
Numbers 9:12
Psalm 34:20

Although the practice of crucifixion included breaking the bones of the crucified to hasten their death, the Roman guards neglected to do this to Jesus, because his death on the cross was relatively quick, no doubt due to the intense scourging and beatings he had received beforehand. They did pierce his side to make certain, however.

If you know the stations of the cross ~ Jesus was whipped and shoved and a crown of thorns was stabbed into his scalp. Then he was forced to carry his own cross which was so heavy that he fell to the ground 3 times... to the site that he was nailed (by his hands and his feet) to, but he wasn't actually beat with anything that would've broken any bones....

John ch. 19 verse 32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

they broke the bones of the crucified so they would die faster. Jesus died before that time. They poked His side with a spear to make sure he was dead. That's when the water spilled out of His side.
