It used to be for 7 years on your DMV record on the print-outs that insurance and some employers get, but they recently extended it to 10 years on the printouts. The date goes from the conviction date, not the incident date. For the penalties that go with it on second, and hopefully never a third offense, it is in your court record forever, so a subsequent offense will always carry the next step of punishment, no matter how long it's been.
A DUI is a serious thing, but a person can get through it and put it behind them if they take it seriously. It is very important to keep a clean driving record after getting one, because an employer or insurer may tolerate a 5 year-old DUI with no tickets after, but if you have an old DUI and other tickets or accidents, they have to look at it as a pattern of irresponsibility. If you got one, never get another and take responsibility, and you'll get over it.

Well in Cali depending on the number of times convicted is a misdemeanor and is eligble to be removed after probation is done. The actual crime never goes away and can be used as a prior throughout a lifetime. The DMV and State background lasts 7 years; Yet private agencies can hold this information forever. A felony will last 10 years

In Canada, DUI will stay on your record permanently. Not only will it be on your permanent record, but your insurance will skyrocket. If you are caught, they take away your licence immediately, and tow away your car on-site.
May I suggest that you don't drink and drive!!!! A permanent record is nothing compared to hurting yourself, or worst yet, hurting someone else. At the end of the day, a record is just a record, but imagine severely hurting someone. It will be on you for the rest of your life.
Don't drink and drive. I know drinking can be a lot of fun, but have a designated driver, or take a taxi home. Drinking and driving is not worth it. I know. I had a friend in high school who died because of a drunk driver.

Yes 7 years but they have a deep file called the "H" that they keep forever. But this is not used for such things as insurance.
