Growing up they weren't. I learned about religion through society. My dad still isn't religious, but my mom all of a sudden is turning into a Christian (oh the humanity).
What lead me to atheism? Well I knew some of things in the Bible couldn't be true (gay being a sin), so I just started to question the things in the Bible and religion in general, and came to the conclusion that it's all false. Just made up stories, they don't make sense to me. And science seems to disprove a lot of it. It will take a hell of a lot of proof to make me believe in god(s). So my atheism really has nothing to do with my parents, although maybe it would have been harder to me to become atheist if they forced a bunch of religious guilt on me.

My parents no longer attend regularly like they use to years ago, but my mother still believes in God she just says that she can believe in God without going to an organized man made religion, and I respect that. I don't think either of my parents are idiots nor do I think that all religious folks are idiots. It's generalizing, and I know I get on here and mock them sometimes, but am only being half honest. I don't discus religion in my real life only here online and the reason being is that most people by the time they enter adulthood already have set beliefs and most won't change their minds. I don't want to change anyones mind I just say what I believe. Do I think religions are false and they delude people? yeah, but I can't call them idiots just because they want something more from life than being born and dying.

My father said people at church will pat you on the back on Sunday, then stab you in the back on Monday. My mother told me God was like a napkin and if I tore off a piece that would be me and another piece would be my sister and another would be her, etc.
My parents did not have positive experiences with organized religion, however, they brought a tremendous amount of joy into me and my sister's life. My childhood memories are filled with laughing and playing with my family.
I don't believe some entity created and governs the Universe. I don't know why I believe the way I do and I really don't care. I am mostly concerned with human interactions. I have never observed a functional relationship between belief and behavior. A person who is a champion of humanity is a friend, regardless of beliefs. A person who performs crimes against humanity is intolerable, regardless of their beliefs.

My dad used to be but just hasn't bothered with it for a while. My mom is christian. I didn't really go to church often on Sundays. I was loosely brought up christian but not really. I was always encouraged to challenge things and make up my own mind about things.
That's exactly what I did and decided to "turn atheist".
Edit: Oh, and I became very interested in the sciences. Now I am a physicist, but all sciences (and many other things like philosophy, politics, economics) fascinate me...and evolutionary biology has really opened my eyes. It was life changing and it makes me love life even more :-)

No. That is what led my husband to his atheism though. My father was an atheist and I was a devout Christian. He always told me that I was too smart to believe in fairytales. My mother was an ex-Catholic who had changed to Protestantism to appease my grandmother. She took us to the Baptist church when we were little. But after my two younger brothers were born, she stopped going. I then joined the Congregationalst church and later the Mormon church. Then studied the bible for five years with Jehovah's Witnesses. From there I became an atheist.

My parents were Christians when I was young. I have always been an atheist - because I realized that God/Christianity was immoral and nonsensical. My siblings are all atheists, but I don't know if they always have been. My mother is now an atheist, too - I suspect she was always a doubter and just afraid to say so.

Yeah, I hated being dragged to church every Sunday. I found it unfair that they tried to get me into something at an early age when I had no opinions of my own. Now I do have my own opinions and I'm an athiest. My parents don't really care though

One was, and the other wasn't. I don't credit or blame them for who I am. I studied philosophy, religion, science, and I enjoy reading biographies of notable historical figures. At this point, I have found that the more I know, the less I believe.
