I think the reverse when understood makes more sense :use reality for your religion..Keep it real...
I am a deeply religious nonbeliever - this is a somewhat new kind of religion.

Good grief, Bob, your conclusion about finding our own truths without relying on others doesn't follow at all from the underlying premise that absolute reality has never been established. I'm not trying to pick a fight here, mind you, but follow along...
Even if absolute reality HAD been established, shouldn't we still find "our own" truths?
Then you say, "in a study they found..."
WHO found, Bob? Who are "they?" Where's the data, what's the study and who are the people who did it? But, OK, let's assume that we have all the answers to those questions. What does the fact that the same part of my brain is used both for imagination while sleeping and awake have to do with finding my own truths? Shouldn't I STILL find my own truths no matter how the brain works?
And that leaves open the highly metaphysical question of, "WHAT is absolute reality?" And, once it is established (if it ever is) how will we know? Who sez? For that matter, what kind of reality is there NOW other than absolute reality? Perhaps you mean absolute reality is the one that EVERYONE agrees to, having come to this agreement without reference to what anyone else thinks (that is, finding our own truths instead of relying on others). Is that it?
And THEN ...what has any of this to do with religion?
'Splain it to me, Bob -you're losing me here.

People live their lives as they see fit, that's the reality. Most people are raised to be devoted to their religion, other people aren't really sure about what they should believe, and others just don't care, reality is what we make of it.

Should it matter who's truths we follow, us or someone else's, if they are so unrealistic. No one knows what reality is unless they feel like they want it to be real. So why can't we use religion as reality, what else is reality?

Some people need something to believe in. The world is nuts and religion gives people hope that there is something better. It is the same reason people believe in UFOs or watch SCI-Fi, to escape the messed up world we live in.

God is the untimate reality, without Whom no other reality can be fully comprehended. Religion is simply a means of contact with the ultimate reality.

That's not what bothers me. Like you said, we all have our realities. The fact that they choose a reality other's believe in though makes them feel theirs is more "correct", and that's what bothers me.

I have found my own truth. My own truth is not in religion. It is in My God. Figure that one out.
