What else does it tell you to do? That just sounds like a natural instinct to me, or a habit, I have things that I have to do, like I have to brush my hair about 10 times a day, cuz I am afraid to have it messed up, and I have to use all these different cremes for my body after I take a shower, or I fear I will have to start this routine all over again, I don't know if this helps or not, but I use soft soap in a bottle, cuz I couldn't stand to see saggy edges on the soap, if I couldn't take them off, I would throw the soap away.

The 'you' that's asking the question is actually stronger than your brain. What you need to do is recognize the signals your brain give you that you feel are inappropriate. Label them 'false alarms', like when the fire alarm goes off and there's no fire. If you do that, then you can decide not to act on the false alarm. I'm sure that firemen in fire stations learn to ignore sirens that are part of someone's malfunctioning fire alarm.
It's been proven that if you do that (ignore the signal and don't do what your misfiring brain tells you to do) then you will change your brain. Your brain will learn to stop telling you to do things you don't need to do. It's called the neuroplasticity of the brain - the ability of the brain to change.
In short, you can change your brain. Go for it.

You may have OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder). Some people get relief from medicine. Others get relief from self-help books from the library. See book below.
