We will be staying in Bangkok for 6 nights over Christmas this year, and want to find a fantastic hotel! We are looking for something touristy. Location is very important. We want to be close to tourist attractions, not on the outskirts of the city. We would prefer a 4 star hotel, one that has nice rooms and friendly staff. We can only afford around 2,500 baht a night though. Any suggestions?

If you're looking for something clean, stay away from Khao san road. Try bangkok-stay.net But, why are you going to stay 6 nights in Bangkok? Are you locked into staying in the city? It's great for shopping, but 24-48 hours is enough. There are a lot nicer places to go in Thailand. You can get on a plane and fly to one of the islands in the south (Phuket or Koh Samui) for like $100. If you want to save money, you can take a bus or train.

Picking up the River Theme. Should you actually decide to stay by the River, then eschew the large impersonal international hotels and look no further than the IBRIK RESORT. This is a boutique hotel, only three rooms, managed by an extremely friendly and helpful young lady. You take breakfast on a balcony overhanging the river, and your outlook across the river is the Royal Palace.
A little over your B2,500 budget perhaps, but well worth the extra. You can book on www.asiatravel.com on which site you'll also find diverse hotels listed by area of Bangkok.

If you prefer to be somewhere nearer the shopping and entertainment, there's a brand new hotel Le Fenix (part of Accor/Mercure) group which stands on Sukhumvit Soi 11and which looks a pretty good option at around B1,900 per night including breakfast.

Or perhaps (staying for 6 nights) you may need a little more space and some extra facilities,in which case there are many good serviced apartments operated by (notably, but not exclusively) Ascott/Somerset Group, President Group, and Centrepoint. All of these have various properties across the city, and you will find studio apartments available at less than your budget,or larger one-bedroomed units at a little more. All have the usual facilities you'll find in the major hotel chains, and all show up on the asiatravel website. (the Ibrik Resort doesn't. It's more a place for eating and showering.

2500baht is a lot! I would recommand The Grand Business Inn which is located in Sukumvit Soi 11. Its a budget hotel but is very clean and located in a great location. Its 2 min walk to the Skytrain. The hotel has free internet and a 24 hours resturant.

Around the hotel, in the night you can find a 24 hour supermarket (5 min walk away) a 7-11 (next door) a money changer/Bank (on the opp side) 10 min walk futher into the soi (street) you will find great massage spas as well as the famous bed supper club (disco) and Q bar (pub) in the night the streets around the hotel is filled with street vendors selling anything from copy watches to Tee-shirts etc After 2am the vendors give way to food stalls for that night supper.

The best part - only 1600bt a night!

You can book the hotel online at http://hotel2thailand.com/
Or try this other website out, very good rates http://www.ratestogo.com/guest.asp?id=4642842
(too bad grand business inn isnt in there)

Goodluck and enjoy your trip!

Well, if you are doing this as a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Bangkok, you really should stay on the river. It allows you to witness a special side of Bangkok, where commerce and tourism meet in beauty.. rather than in noisy, stinky car traffic.
No one will argue that the Marriot is the TOP of the line on the river.. it is the place everyone wants to stay, whether they can afford it or not. Incredibly beautiful.
If it is out of your price range, teh next best option on the river is The Royal River.. same idea , but more of a locally-run Thai version of the MArriot.
You should avoid the Millenium Hilton on the river.. it looks, feels and is a businessman's hotel.. it loses something in translation.. feels sterile in comparison to teh MArriot. All hotels of this standing on the river run free shuttles across the river every 15 minutes or so....

Try the Indra Regent Hotel Bangkok in Pratunam area. They have a USD 65 per night rate for a standard room during xmas. Seems like all the hotels raise or adjust their rates in November.

http://www.asiarooms.com/thailand/bangkok/indra_regent-hotel-room.html

I checked www.asiahotels.com and their rates are similar or almost the same. I like asiarooms.com because you can find the hotels by area. Indra Regent has like 400 reviews, average rating is 4 of 5 smiles.

Good luck and enjoy
