She is moving to new york; I already live here. She is on the fence about coming out or living in the closet. She is from a very conservative family in the Bible belt. I think it would be great for her to get some exposure to other gay people and see how accepted that lifestyle is in new york. I don't want to change her, so please spare me the responses telling me to just love and accept her as she is. I already do that...I'm looking for fun things to do around the city that are les/gay friendly. Thank you!!

Why not just let her be for a while ? .Give her time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Give her time to realize that while she may have stood out like a sore thumb in wherever she came from , she's now in NYC where "different "people are so common that they become invisible. Give her time to enjoy the freedom that comes with being anonymous.

Places where lots of lesbians can typically be found:

-- Brooklyn's Prospect Park
-- Park Slope coffee houses (they're not on Fourth Avenue, though...the dykiest is Gorilla, on 5th avenue at Park Place)
-- Lesbian bars -- Cattyshack on 4th avenue in Brooklyn, Henrietta Hudson's and Cubbyhole in Manhattan
-- WNBA Liberty games
-- East Village/Lower East Side coffee houses
-- Bluestockings, the feminist bookstore on Allen St. near Houston
-- the LGBT Center as discussed above...they have a calendar of events on their website... I believe lesbian movie night is every other Friday, and another night of the week is board game night

There's also the West Village (brunch places, bookstores, etc.), which is usually much heavier on the gay men than women, but lesbians are represented too, plus seeing gay men together in public might actually be less threatening to her than women if she's struggling to come out.

Bring her to the Gay & Lesbian Center in the Village. They've got support groups, youth and adult programs, a library, and all kinds of events.

There's of course all the stuff that goes on during Pride Month like the Gay & Lesbian Parade, plus the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, and the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. There are also plenty of events listings like Gayout, Planet Out, and LGBT-friendly listings in Time Out NY or NY Magazine. See what looks interesting and just go!

Try a coffee shop on Fourth Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn. She'll be in good company.
