I would send out a thank you note the following day (people rarely do this & it gets noticed) thanking them for their time and expressing your interest in the position.
After that, I'd probably call either about two weeks after or about 1/2 week after they said they'd likely be letting people know (unexpected things come up in HR & with hiring managers to throw off an expected time frame sometimes).
When you call back or email let them know that you're still interested and ask if they have an estimate on when they might be making a decision. Don't express impatience, just ask.

You should get an idea of when the decision will be made, at the interview. If you didnt do that, I would wait about 3 days or so. If you interviewed on a Wednesday, call Friday. Don't use email after the interview, be sure to call. Prepare for the call by being in the right place and have time to talk without being rushed. You never know, they may want to speak to you about the details and you want to be prepared to give a firm date for starting your new career. Don't wait too long or it will appear that you are not interested.

I believe that you should wait 2 days before making a follow-up call unless they make it very clear not to. In that case I would send a Thank You note the day after. Thanking the interviewer for their time and how wonderful it was to meet meet him/her and what a great fit and asset you would be to their organization.

same or next day - email or snail mail - don't call-they may still be interviewing and probably will not have made a decision yet - if you haven't heard anything in a week -call and ask if they've decided yet. some positions take weeks to get thru the whole hiring process

You should ALWAYS send a thank you letter immediately. Then follow-up with a thank you e-mail / just checking in e-mail 2 or 3 days later. Then wait. After 2 weeks call them to see what's up.
