The truth is there are two types of Christians. The first type is the religious Christians and the second type is the born-again Christians. Almost all churches have both types of Christians attending them.
The religious Christian tries to earn God's favor by doing good and being good. The religious Christian is usually involved in various rituals often designed by their churches thinking that they mean something to God (but they really don't).
The born-again Christian (read John 3:3) understands that there is nothing they can do to earn God's grace... it's a free gift from God simply for the asking.
Are catholics Christians? The true answer is that some are and some are not. Bottom line, if they've personally asked one-to-one Jesus Christ to be their Lord and Saviour, and meant it, then yes, they are a Christian. Otherwise they're just religious which is unfortunately mostly what the world notices.

Ok...
I am not a Catholic or protestant yet I am a Christian. That is very important. To believe in Christ as He is the only way to Eternal Life. I believe I go to the true Church. I believe the Catholic and protestant churches have part of the truth but not the fulness of the Gospel. There was an apostacy and the truths were skewed. Man made up a lot of things to fill in the gaps. Thankfully God saw fit to bring the fulness of the Gospel. :)

After a post like that, one must wonder how rigorous your methods of proof are.
A lot easier being Catholic? Easier for what? I have known numerous Catholics in my life. I have seen no other Christian faith which can be as oppressive or spirit-crushing as Catholicism. This isn't some theory. I'm talking about spiritually devastated people and it's all because of their Church. Easier? So much for your credibility.

Your statements do not make sense. I can prove you wrong if you care to completely read the Bible. The only way you can get to heaven is through Jesus not by praying to Mary. I guess it is easier being a Catholic if that's what you want to be. I think my way is easier because my sins are covered by the blood of Jesus. I don't have to go to confession to be forgiven for my sins by someone who doesn't have the right to grant forgiveness. Only Jesus can do that. Trying not to sin
is much better than going ahead and doing what you want to and then asking for forgiveness. Christians do have better answers. Have you ever talked with any? Some of my good
friends are Catholic and you aren't one of them.

What proof are you talking about? Christ's worldwide body of believers is the one, true church.
"we even believe that you can get to heaven." How generous of you. But, my eternal destination doesn't rest on what the Pope determines. God makes that decision - not the Catholic Church.
How exactly do you interpret the following scripture?
"That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you WILL BE saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, 'ANYONE who trusts in him will never be put to shame.' For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, 'EVERYONE who calls on the name of the Lord WILL BE SAVED.'"
I see no mention of having to belong to a particular church as a prerequisite to being saved. So, I'll choose to trust God's Word over what man says.
No matter how people try to tap dance around it, a lot of Catholic doctrine and practices are unbiblical. Did you know that the Israelites once adored and venerated the "Queen of Heaven" just a you do and that they even accredited her with blessings? To find out what God thought about this practice, you should take a look at the book of Jeremiah. His reaction may be surprising to you! http://www.biblegateway.com/keyword/?search="Queen%20of%20Heaven"&version1=31&searchtype=all
How can we (Protestants) be sure of our salvation?
"And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory." -Ephesians 1:13-14
I have the deposit - If you have the deposit, you can rest assured in God's promise. And, by the way, I'm not living a life of shame and pain. I've been set free in Christ! Have you?

im catholic and theres a few things i just dont like.
1. my church believes that if you arent catholic your going to hell end of story. and they also believe that if you dont go to church every sunday your going to hell...even if you ask forgiveness. doesnt make any sense to me.
2. its very repetitive. we do the same thing every sunday. i think only a fourth (if not way less) of the people that go there actually knows what its like to feel God. i sure didnt until i started giong to another church.
3. the whole pope thing doesnt make sense. the catholic church is creating a being that is close to a God but not quite God. uhhmm...isnt that basically against the Second Commandment?
4. dont all Christians believe that we can get to heaven? my Baptist church sure does as well as my Catholic church
5. why does it matter as long as we believe in God. to me Christian is Christian. the only reason i dont like the Catholic church is because i dont feel God there, and no one challenges me to pursue being a Christian. i have little self motivation...i need someone to help me want to do something before i will.
6. i learned nothing about God or the bible that i understand now at my Catholic church that i went to for 14 years. i have learned so much in the past 6 months that i have been at my Baptist church. going to that church was a God-send for me...but i guess thats only me...

the catholic church did not even exist till somewhere around 300 AD, when emperor of Rome gave power over religion to the bishop of Rome, but the bishop of Rome had no power anywhere else, so Rome used the sword to get power ,called the Inquisition .
also the bible shows no place that Mary is to be worshipped or that she is Devinne.
and Jesus said , call no man father, for there is only one father which is in heaven,( the word pope is Latin for father).

It does not matter what scripture you give them that justifies the Church's stance, they will not listen because they don't want to. They are stubborn and a good lesson to learn from them is not be stubborn, but be open minded to the spirit. They do have good points, but this stubbornness of theirs is a pitfall. Let us pray earnestly for them and for understanding. St Alphonsus de Ligouri had one day a week set aside for certain intentions. I believe that Tuesday is the day for such prayers.

God Bless you...
Wow... sounds like somebody has a lot of pride. That's what works and knowledge does to you. Please read Ephesians 2:8-9 and learn what the Bible has to say about works and faith.
Then read Galations 6:1-5
"1Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. 2Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, 5for each one should carry his own load. "
Or Romans 3:27-28
" 27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. 28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law."

You may have all the proof you need, and believe it with all your heart but your decision is yours and yours alone.. you cannot work out another person's salvation...here is what the Bible says on this:
Philippians 2:12-13
"Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. "
