Saul, also know as Paul, had been persecuting the Christians, the followers of Christ. Jesus knew that Saul would be a good preacher, he knew that Saul could do his work but yet Saul refused to so Jesus appeared to him. Kicking against the goads ( original word used which means a pointed stick which is why the word prick is used) meant going against the grain. Later in that Chapter Saul goes the path that Jesus has indicated and does God's work and he is persecuted. That is what is meant by kicking against the pricks. It was difficult for Saul to go against the majority or opposition. He was content to persecute the Christians because then he was with the majority. Hope that helps.

Well, just quickly I went and looked up "pricks" in the dictionary (Merriam Webster) and one definition is:
"to cause to be or stand erect"
If I were to take this definition as it makes most sense; I would say that "it is hard for thee to kick against those who stand erect"
Or rather to say that Saul, who was persecuting Jesus, would have a hard time with said persecution due to Jesus being *special*...much akin to a Beagle trying to kick against a Saint Bernard...a futile effort.
Edit: And that is not the NIV version; I happened across it in King James Version. You may want to cite the actual translation...if you know anything about Bibles; no two are the same. NIV does not translate like this.

Just think about kicking a cactus.
Ok, but really, A prick was a sharp spear people used on animals to make them move. Often the animals would kick back when pricked, which made the spear hurt them even more. Jesus Christ was telling Saul that his actions were harming himself more than anyone else. When we fight against what is right, we hurt ourselves the most

Acts 9:5 (Amplified Bible)
Translates it this way, which I think you will find easier to understand than the King James translation:
"And Saul said, Who are You, Lord? And He said, I am Jesus, Whom you are persecuting. It is dangerous and it will turn out badly for you to keep kicking against the goad [to offer vain and perilous resistance]."

The word for "pricks" is really a goad. That was a staff with a metal tip with which they encouraged their flock to advance. it was also used to defend the flock from predators.
Jesus is our Master, and those who war against Him are, like wayward sheep, kicking against the goad" Like Lucifer, those who fight agains God will surely loose.
Jesus is truly the Good Shepherd, and a Bible code proves Him as the Messiah at http://abiblecode.tripod.com

The word pricks means a goad or a pointed stick used to move an animal in the direction that you want it to go. Jesus was using a metaphor for Paul's stubborness and his refusal to recognize Jesus for who He really was.

Basically, Jesus Christ, the risen Lord, had been assaulting Saul's conscience the whole time he was "breathing out threats" against Christians and persecuting them.
That's what it means. It was hard for Paul to deny the conviction he was wrong in what he was doing, and for a time, the conviction drove him to increase his persecution.

you wrote that wrong.
It says......He said Who are you Lord? He said, I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. Nevertheless, rise and enter into the city and what you must do will be told you.
Saul had been persecuting Jesus and an angel blinded him on the road to Damascus. And an angel blinded Saul.
Saul went into the city and became a believer. He became Paul.

Paul thought he was pursuing heretics but he was persecuting Jesus Himself. Anyone who persecutes today is also guilty of persecuting Jesus because believers are the body of Christ on Earth!
