Sorta like Picasso's Don Quixote, but the figures look more like aliens. I'm remembering longish arms and bald heads. Is it Dali? Picasso? It's not Munch's "The Scream"--you can't make out any features on the faces. They look like iron sculpture or something. They are black or charcoal gray--look like silhouettes. I think there's more than one of them.

The figures were not fleshy, nor flesh-colored--they are solid dark gray or black, without features. You can't make out any clothing. I can't remember where/when I saw this piece.

your descriptions are very reminiscent to the works of Alberto Giacometti, his sculptures are just what you have describe. tall, thin and long armed, like aliens and indiscernible. : )

It does not sound like any Dali I know of. Could be Picasso, could also be Munch. Go to a website with a major collection of Picasso's work and check it out. Pax - C

As soon as I read your description I thought of "The ghost of Vermeer of Delft which can be used as a table" by Dali. This certainly sits the bill of being like a shadow, and he has very long arms. Also his hat makes his head look round so you might remembered it as being bald.

The only other Dali i can think of would be "The Temptation of Saint Anothony", which has lots of long legged grey elephants in it.

Picasso painted more than 20,000 pieces in his life time, so it might be quite difficult to pin it down if it's one of his less well known pieces.

Where did you see the painting? Was it in a book, museum or gallery?
