Beyond keeping the area clean, avoid dehydration. An adult should drink about eight glasses of water each day, and urinate frequently. Frequent urination can flush bacteria out of the urethra and avoid stagnation of urine in the bladder.
Other preventative measures would be to take herbal preparations. Cranberry juice or cranberry fruit extract is acidic, and creates a hostile environment for any bacteria which could be introduced to the urinary tract.
After saying this, a couple of times it worked for me, but I have ended up in the ER because I need the anti-biotic. When I was on vacation in SF, it happened and I drank gallons of water and it worked that time, but truthfully, it hasn't worked every time.

There is no home remedy for a urinary tract infection, however it is always good to drink lots of water and cranberry juice is good.. There is also a cranberry tablet available.
An over the counter medication that is good when you are unable to get to the doctor for awhile like a holiday or week-end is called Azo-standard..It is used for the horrible burning of bladder spasms and it does bring some relief. It will make your urine a dark orange, but it is so much better than the burning and hurting.

Ditto on the Cranberry Juice.
Buddy of mine had it and that is what he did. Worked for him.
Someone else I know had a terrible time with one but because the docs couldn't figure out what was the infection. Kept giving her different anti biotics and nothing worked.
She went back to her old doc back in NY state and guess what, he got it on the first try and gave her an antibiotic that wiped it out first shot. But also said to drink cranberry juice !

NOPE, you gotta get to a doctor and get mega antibiotics that is the only way to cure it once you have one.
To prevent urinary track infections though, you can drink a glass of cranberry juice every day or just drink alot of water ~ every day.

Ditto - as many have said - with the cranberry juice. No added sugar. Lots of it. It's worked for me within two days and two of the big bottles of juice.
Also, if you're prone to them, two things:
drink cranberry juice prophylactically
if you're female, make sure you urinate before & after sex

No. UTIs are cause by bacteria and only an antibiotic will kill bacteria. All antibiotics are prescription only. You need to see the doctor.
People will say that cranberry juice will kill it but it won't; it will help to prevent it in future by making the urine acidic and inhospitable to bacteria. That's been documented in clinical studies.

cranberry and water are the best. on top of that you can also try homeopathic remedies. wal-mart has something called azo-yeast for yeast infections, but they also make one for UTI...it's azo-something...cant think of the name right now... sorry.

well, if you catch it early enough alka seltzer will sometimes increase the alkalinity of the urine enough to kill bacteria, but if it's been more than 24 hours the success of this littel remedy goes down exponentially.
