It's ridiculous, and I'm so disappointed to here Obama advocating this. Adolescence is, by definition, the onset of sexuality and no one should be imposing these issues on a kindergartner. Age appropriate to me means let them be kids, because that's valuable in it's own right. Imposing grown up issues like sexuality on children only robs them of their childhood.

The key here is "age appropriate". I asked my mother where I came from when I was 4, and she was a Registered Nurse, so she told me. She was very matter of fact, and very general, but basically did the "boys have this, girls have this, and this is how a baby grows in a woman's belly". I don't see anything wrong with it, it was never a big deal. Yes, I learned from my Mom, not the school... but parents CAN be very irresponsible when it comes to educating their children in several important areas, so I do not see a problem with doing it in school.
My suggestion is that if there are parents out there that DO have a problem with it, they need to get active and volunteer at their childrens school so that they can be involved in the process.

Yes. Pre-school children do ask their parents where babies come from and why the boy/girl next door look different; and not all parents are able to properly explain this to them in ways that they can understand. Perhaps teachers will be able to help address this by answering such questions in a very objective way that is appropriate for the children's level of understanding.
We cannot go on lying to children that they came from the stork; or in my country, parents usually say that the baby was left by someone on their doorstep (since we don't have storks) or they were found on the trash can (this one is really mean). Children have as much right as we do to have correct and unbiased information on matters that concern them as long as this appropriate and recognises their evolving capacities.

I agree young kids should be taught to watch for sexual predators
In response to criticism from Republican Mitt Romney, Obama said the former Massachusetts governor was only trying to "score cheap political points" when he told a Colorado audience that Obama wanted sex education for kindergartners.
"All I said was that I support the same laws that exist in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, in which local communities and parents can make decisions to provide children with the information they need to deal with sexual predators," Obama said.

"But it’s the right thing to do," Obama continued, "to provide age-appropriate sex education, science-based sex education in schools."
i remember asking my dad when i was like 4 or 5 what these "balls" i had were for and he got out a book and told me... in a way a 5 year old would under stand... left out the whole sex part to keep it age appropriate

Yes the right kind of education is ok. You can see on the news where 3rd graders are trying to have sex so there needs to be some kind of education about it in the proper manor.

I think sex education starts before kindergarden. Kids ask questions that are appropriate to their age levels and they should be answered appropriately. They may have even seen the birth of kittens or puppies....

disagree//this is a typical ghetto solution to children having children that come from homes with no parental supervision or interaction....this is the wrong way to handle the problem..the correct way is to have the PARENTS,not the government teach their children when they feel the kids are ready and they know this time has come by spending time with their children and raising them correctly, not following the democratic party hack line of "let the government do it for you".....hes shown his true colors with this little opening announcement

In kindergarten sex education begins with an egg and showing the children in that way about birth and life! They are no teaching small children how it is done to get a fertile egg.
