Why not going directly to Heaven or Hell.

Cause we can't pass Go, and we can't collect $100.00. The $100.00 goes to the Church, of course. Its a "fear" tax, and it works.

The idea is that once and for all, God will separate heaven and hell, and there will never again be a link between the two.

Currently, heaven and hell are linked by a spiritual place known to us as Abraham's Bosom, and by a physical place we all know as Earth. But in the end, both of these places will be dissolved, and heaven and hell will be eternally separated. The war will be over once and for all.

(Revelation 20:12-13) And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. But another scroll was opened; it is the scroll of life. And the dead were judged out of those things written in the scrolls according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up those dead in it, and death and Ha′des gave up those dead in them, and they were judged individually according to their deeds.

what are those ' deeds' ?

They cannot be what we did wrong in our past life. Why?. Because they have already been ' paid for' with our death.

(Romans 6:23) For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.

Wages are full payment for something.
So our death is full payment for our sins. Once we die we owe nothing.
so what are we being judged on?

It is our reaction to waking up [ being resurrected] in god's new system. and either accepting or rejecting it.

If we accept it, we have a future back on the earth. If we reject it, sorry, but instant negation/destruction.
(Psalm 37:11) But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

(Psalm 37:29) The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon it.

And without death.
It has been done away with
(Revelation 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

Judgment day is the day we account for our sins. When Jesus came into the world he saved us from our sins. Those that believe in Him will have everlasting life. Our hearts will be judged on this day as to whether we are true believers or not. Judgment Day is to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. This is the day that the world we know will end and our bodies will meet our souls in heaven.

Because, God wants you to see exactly why you are, or are not, going to Heaven. Also, it is a time that Christians will be judged on how well they represented their Faith and told others about Jesus while on Earth,. That is why it is SO IMPORTANT to, first be Saved, then, lead the life that Jesus wants you to live. Thanks for the question and have a great day!!

As I see it; when one dies these days
some will indeed go directly to Heaven
and all the rest of us will go to Hell
as it is the place of the dead.

Judgment Day as I see it, will be a period after the ressurrection to see if in a perfect New World they will then do bad things.

The idea of Judgement Day is so that you know that where you are spending eternity is your just reward for your beliefs.

If you do not repent and put all of your faith in Jesus Christ then on Judgement day there will be no doubt of where and or why you are where you are.

just my thought. not sure exactly but I think you do go strait to either...just that the day it happens is called judgment day. I'm sure it was called something else but because the translations changed so many times, we now call it what we understand better.

It seems to me that God would like to hear why you do the things you do.
