Hard to say, but when the enemy hides among civilians, it is hard to differentiate. I would put the onus on the civilian to come forth and expose the infiltrator?

I don't know if this quote is a true quote from someone or not but i know from personal experience that it is entirely possible. I have been on convoy security in Iraq for 8 1/2 months and i have or someone else in my platoon has come close to firing on friendly forces on a few ocassions. Our ops are run mostly at night, most friendly forces don't acknowledge identification procedures on the road or just ignore them entirely. We are trained to not let anyone within 300 meters of our convoys and when someone keeps coming closer despite being warned just because they think you should recognize every type of vehicle the allies use over here things can get hairy. Plus, communication between the army, marines and air force isn't the best and communication between civilian contractors and the military is worse. We are all scared to shoot for fear it is friendly ops and scared not to shoot for fear it is an insurgent trick and is a VBIED (car bomb). What do you do? We feel we would rather take a chance of someone else's life than any of ours. The contractors should not be over here. They follow no rules, are accountable to no-one or any laws, american or iraqi.

Those guys are earning a four-star general's pay for doing a corporal's job. And some of them do view the troops with disdain. Some are "clueless cowboys" who think the rules of security compliance don't apply to them. Such was the case with that Italian who thought he could run a military road block because he obviously didn't look like an Arab. He's dead and the Italian courts want to hold the Americans accountable.

He sounds like a security contractor.

Many run in 'low profile' vehicles which is fine for attempting to not get blown up but can make for difficulties when they run into a convoy also trying to not get blown up and they are driving like a suicide bomber.

The Aussies are our allies of course and no American would shoot at an Aussie if they were known to be that. They are fine soldiers and allies, but just like the Italian agent with the recovered journalist, they know the rules and as former Soldiers they know that certain behaviours, that appear to be aggressive and suicide bomber like by someone that appears to be chechen are going to get them shot. Those young soldiers on those checkpoints have seconds to decide if the car going 50mph at their position is a chechen or friendly.

Every soldier knows the repercussions of being wrong in that decision. If you're driving around Baghdad in a low profile vehicle, you most certainly should take that into account when you decide to drive up to a checkpoint.

Evidently he was in a situation where he was giving a warning shot and didn't care too much for it. If he were objective, he'd be thankful that his ignorant behavior didn't get him killed.

If the Iraqis can figure out not to do those things, certainly our Aussie friends who have trained to be on the other side of the checkpoint can figure out that it's not a wise move.

Well with your question, it is about the troops, not the government so answers about the US is fing up, are pointless.

The quote is about half the troops in Iraq are messing up and shooting each other with friendly fire.

TOTALLY NOT TRUE. I was just over there. There are 150,000 troops over there. If half of them are messing up and shooting each other and non distinguishable from enemy or friendly, we would have ALOT more people dead than we do.

50% of the people over there, never even fire a weapon while in Iraq. SO to say that 50% are messing up, is an impossible stat.

It really doesn't matter if he brings back the draft. If he declares war on Iran, the USA will be devastated. Iranians are not stupid people. They are learning from all the mistakes the USA is making in Iraq. This gives Iran the advantage if a conflict arises. Iran will be better prepared to defend themselves.

It seems right, I mean Americans don't need to be it the war, because we're getting hurt and killing innocents along with it. The war in Iraq is about the shiite and sunnis, and americans are getting in between so there obviously causing problems. Though let me add this...Americans have to help fix Iraq now that their involved.

this guy probably had a bad experience..he does not speak for all of his mates..bad things happen in times of confusion, chaos..Australia is one of our strongest allies, i dont doubt he made the statement, but when he looks back he will probably regret it, or it was taken out of context to further complicate things in Iraq..
