It depends somewhat on the climate and latitude but one of the above answers was correct in that it is usually September. The farther north (Canada and Montana) the earlier. Even so, I have seen cold snaps in Colorado get the rut going in the second week of September, but it's usually a bit later. As the aspen trees turn their brightest yellow and orange -- shedding their earliest leaves -- so goes the rut.

But a cow who is not bred in September can go into estrus again a month or so later and get local bulls worked up again.

The State Conservation People where you live know these things. Call them. They are the ones who regulate the rules concerning wild life in your state, such as fishing and hunting licenses, etc. Happy trails.
