Can plants be bred to generate more oil?

I'm talking about sunflower, olive, corn, etc... What causes these plants to create oil and can this function be amplified through genetic engineering? Could an oil be developed from the plant world which would augment our energy supplies in some manner?

Of course you can, there are some field trials of GMO crops developed by big companies with the characteristics you ask....

Your best bet for using vegetable oils is to turn it into bio-diesel.
