"well just about every american agrees amnesty isnt an option " ???

Polls the day the right-wing in the Senate killed the immigration bill:
30%--opposed the bill because it provided a legal status-even though that required the payment of a stiff fie, and leaving the country and applying for admission. That is NOT amnesty--by any SANE definition.
28%-favored bill plus 15 % opposed as too harsh= 43% favoring bill with some sort of legal status provision
27% undecided.

The balance of support is FOR legal status. The fact that the bigots on the right don't does not mean "most Americans" share their views. We don't.

Now: here is the situation--andwhy nothing is happening:

>for 12 years the right-wing controlled Congress. 6 with Bush as president. AND DID NOTHING to address the growing immigration problem
>When a conservative proposal was put forward by Bush, the right-wing scuttled it
>Now, when the Democrats take complete control in 2008, there will be immigration reform--and a much more liberal bill than the one Bush proposed

And the right wing has no grounds to gripe. They've had every opportunity to fix this problem their way. Now they are out of luck.

It's because we really don't want it to stop. We've grown used to having those illegal aliens in our work force. The employers among us don't care to really check papers. The homeowners love having that strange-sounding little fellow do their landscaping for a low price. Our business travelers appreciate the hard working room maids in all these hotels and motels.
Maybe we will soon get a real economic "taste" of what the loss of illegal alien labor in one key industry will mean. Reports out of the Imperial and San Joaquin Valley farming areas of California are starting to show a labor shortage. Seems a lot of the produce pickers have moved on to construction jobs in Nevada and Arizona.

I am not mad at the illegals other then it is not fair to the people that come here the right way. And I don`t think we should turn them away from hospitals because they are still human. I think we have an illegal employer problem and they are the ones that gave them the motivation to come here because corporate American will hire them, we need to threaten employers with jail.

Not every American agrees that amnesty--esp. conditional amnesty--is not an option. Reagan did it once before, so there's a precedence. As for the government not doing anything, they're the ones who voted down the motion to provide amnesty.

The problem is figuring out what can feasibly be done, more than it is doing it

People aren't doing anything because most people have better things to do......like worry about how we are going to get our troops home safely.
