Ever hear of the 1970's version of the war in heaven story??? When the counsel took place, satan's plan was to make everyone be good, jesus plan was to make everyoen have free will,t he father liked Jesus plan and satan got mad and started a war, those that were with satan were born with black skin, those that could not decided whose side they were on were born with half white/half dark skin (asia, hawian, indian ect) those that fought with Jesus were born with white skin.
I like the new version, it explains were satan gets his servants the demons from. It is also alot nier to the african American and more polictically correct.

Long, long ago in a place perhaps not too very far away, and many, many hours before time began, everyone who was scheduled to hang out in a place that was tentatively titled "earth" came together to listen to some ideas on how to get back "home" once they were done doing the earth thing. (A forum that was maybe sort of like the Lincoln-Douglas debates.) Two proposals were thrown on the table for helping people return to live with their Heavenly Father if they sinned while on Earth. The plan that was chosen (by God--now that's validation!) had Jehovah (aka, Jesus) as it's author. Good plan. The one that didn't make the cut was spearheaded by Lucifer (aka, Satan). Ungood plan. Lucifer didn't take too kindly to his brainchild being dismissed, and he started a kind of riot. He even convinced many of the attendees that he was a better supreme being than God (aka, Elohim, Heavenly Father). Ultimately this led to what has been called the War in Heaven--when Satan and his legions went one way and everyone else bid them farewell and good riddance. As for the bad warriors, well . . . have you ever wondered why you're tempted to do bad stuff? (OK, perhaps not YOU, but other people.) Yep, it's because those groupies of Satan are on the Earth today as spirits still trying to win you and everyone else over to the "dark side." And as for that that dark-skin myth you referred to, that's, well, a myth. Untrue. A falsehood. Maybe even one perpetuated by Satan or one of his dead end gang members.

If you truly want to know about the war in heaven, read Moses 4.

Mormonism teaches that the third of the hosts of heaven who followed Lucifer were cast out of heaven never to be born into physical bodies.

sheesh.....no....the bad warriors weren't born with dark skin.
In a nutshell.
In the pre-mortal life Jesus and Satan both presented a plan.
Jesus said he'd give all mankind free agency. They could choose good or bad themselves. All the glory would be to Heavenly Father.
Satan said that he'd force all mankind back to heaven. He'd take all the glory for himself.
God accepted Jesus' plan.
Those who followed Satan were cast out and not allowed to be born on earth.
Those who chose Jesus' plan were allowed to be born on earth.

I don't know what story you were reading, but these are chapters in LDS scripture and a reference out of our Bible Dictionary that explain our beliefs about it.

A good fictional story is "Our Turn on Earth" You could probably just google it. The first part or act is about the war in heaven.

One third of the spirits followed Lucifer, and were denied the chance to come to mortality and get a body, etc. The other two thirds DO get to have a mortal body, and learn to find God again, etc. It is the OPINION of some that race was determined by how valiantly they fought, but that's not official teaching.

When God's plan was presented, one named Lucifer, stepped forward and said:
1 "Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor.
2 But, behold, my Beloved Son, which was my Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto me—Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever."
God then chose His Son to be the Redeemer and Satan convinced 1/3 the hosts of Heaven to rebel and God caused that they be cast down to Earth.
I hope this helps.

For a nice illustrated story of the Pre-Existence, please refer to:

This should explain everything and scare the willies out of you that rational people would believe such a thing.
