Great question! I'm glad your one of my contacts because you and I have a lot in common. But, back to the question...Atheist don't have The Lord in life, so they go to alcohol thinking it will be a reliever like God. They, then, get addicted to that stuff and turn into a mess. It's a sad thing.

Not believeing in GOD has nothing to do with why any of us drink or do drugs.
What I feel the real reason is that we want to escape the reality of the fact that we have to play a rat in a cage system.
What I mean is , none of us are happy going to work just to pay all the bills, insurances, mortgages, etc knowing that we will never really get anywhere. Hell noboby can ever truely own a house or land due to the fact of land taxes and insurances if you own a home, then don't be in a hazzard area like florida because our insurances will cost as much as a peice of property in another state. Mine is $4,280 a year, that's ruffly $357 a month, just for insurance!!!!!Then my land taxes are $3,642 a year, thats $303.5 a month for a grand total of $660 a month and I'm not even talking utilities, car ins, or anything else. Think about it. YOU NEVER CAN OR WILL OWN ANYTHING! Not even your paid off car, you have to pay ins every month and once a year you buy plates. The definition of owning something is: it doesn't cost you anything any more. And that does not exist in America.
Escaping also includes relationships. Most of us suck at it and are lucky if we get it right. Drinking and doing drugs hides our inscurities and makes it easier to deal with people in our life. Be it a first date, a stale relationship, or conflicts in the family. Not to mention a death in the family. Drinking or doing drugs is a emotional buffer, it gives the illusion of making things easier when in reality they only make things more difficult. Why? Due to tolerance levels, eventually you'll have to do it too much and end up drunk or stoned. FACT!

As far as AA goes. It's the bigest joke of all. I've been through it and it's bullshi&. GOD is not going to do a damn thing to stop you drinking or doing drugs. The cold hard truth is only you can stop yourself. They are ENABLING you to fail by having you ask for help from a higher power, when they SHOULD be teaching you to find the power (will power) in yourself!!!! Nobody, not even GOD can stop you from drinking or doing drugs, only YOU can!!!
It's a very simple reason why we drink and do drugs, and GOD has nothing to do with it, only we do. And we do it to escape reality, in whatever form.

I rarely get drunk, but when I do it has nothing to do with my atheism. It's mainly because I'm at a party with friends or because I've misjudged the amount of wine I should be consuming :-).

I think AA is a crock, actually. I've known too many people who relapsed immediately after they stopped having to go to meetings every single day. How is replacing an addiction with a hopeless reliance on group helping, exactly?

If you're referring to the drinking questions on here... I don't think many people are actually drinking alcohol. It's really just a way to cope with the stupid on here...

I'm an atheist and I don't drink, but I have the strong feeling that you're feeling pretty drunk on the false power that the Jesus freakism gives you. Maybe it's time to get your head out of your a-- and get a life.

No, if you really need a reason to get drunk, it shows an utter lack of commitment.

AA is not for atheists. AA is for drunk believers. If you'd ever been to a meeting, you'd know that?

What planet are you living on?...and do they offer wireless?

You're so right. Not only are we immoral liars who steal everything we see, we think something's only illegal if we don't get caught. Now to top it all off, we're slurring drunks!

Where do you guys get this stuff?

[Edit] Do you realize most of the drunken bums you run into on the street praise God? Go outside once in a while.

[2nd Edit] (((((Riegan! Hugs!)))) That's good to know: I've got a daughter on the way in December. Oh, horrors! If she survives me, and if she survives the Christian recruiting center (oops! I mean, "schools") she'll likely be *gasp!* a free thinker just like her dad! Since I'm also not going to disown her if she should turn out to be gay--and I am, indeed, saving her cord blood for its embryonic stem cells--I'm Christianity's worst nightmare! ****Evil laugh!**** Fear me! Fear me!

jesus got drunk. any amount of alcohol will change your way of thinking, you will be intoxicated with even a small amount. i had a boyfriend years ago who was a drunk. he used to get violent too. i convinced him to go to AA. he said he would as long as i went with him. well we got there and it was god this and god that. i told him he didn't have to go back cause he was atheist. how sad is that? a group that can help alcoholics has to be religion based.

edit: hey writer's block - don't forget that you eat babies too!

No, we get "drunk" because people keep asking us inane questions on here.
(If you're trying to insinuate that atheists are all drunks, go to any alcohol treatment meeting or center, and take a survey of people's religions there. Guess what you're going to find...)

We just drink until stuff like this makes sense.
A previous question from you:
"Why you Atheist moking GOD, and those who believe in GOD, but in the end of your lives you guys ask?
forgiveness. that sounds hypocritical"
It should be why are you, Atheists, mocking. Forgiveness and That. The question itself is illogical.
If it weren't for Atheists, who would spell check for you?
As for me, I drink espresso. I don't think that qualifies for A.A.
