I was wondering how long and often Air Force deployments really are. I have read through the questions already asked about this and it seems everyone has a different answer. My recruiter said there are 10 groups that rotate, so that deployments are only 4-6 months long I think he said every two yrs. But then I talk to some people and they say it depends on your job, and that they only deploy who they need. So I was wondering does anyone know?

strictly dependent on your job and your billet. there are those who will deploy yearly for 4-6 months at a time, and those who will never be away from home base more than a week in five years.

The AF is under pressure from the Army and Marines to help relieve the OPTEMPO of their own forces, as is the Navy. as a result, many individual Airmen and Sailors are being deployed for 12-15 month tours.

It depends on your job, your rank, the base you're at, and the need.

There was a time when people stationed in PACAF (any base in the Pacific) did not deploy to the mid. east. However, that changed in 1998, we started sending groups regularly.

Cops deploy more than others. The go for at least 6 months. Just like the other branches, this is 6 months in country. It does not include travel time or training before hand. All that added up and it's about 7 1/2 months at a time.

Depends on which security force unit he is assigned to. But security forces are way under manned right now, so deployment tempo is very high. Expect him to be deployed at least 6 months out of the year. Some units are deploying for 6 months, back home 4 months and deploying for another 6 months. Basically, security forces are deploying more than anyone , in any service are right now.

It does all depend on the job. and the base. My husband unit rotates out very often as they are very understaffed so everyone goes more. He also volunteers. My husband is now on deployment number 6. he's done one 12 month tour in Iraq and is now on his 5th 4 month tour. He's also been to Afghanistan three times. He works on Special Operations aircraft (Crew Chief)
On the other hand, our neighbor works in Finance and has never had a deploment or TDY!

It is all job based. If you are space/missles, I know people who have been in for 10yrs and never deployed. Conversely, I know people who were in special ops or aircraft maintainers that spent about 2yrs out of 3 either deployed or training away from home.

The standard is the AEF bucket (air expeditionary force) and it is 120-180 day rotations. But like i said, it all depends on what your job is.

I've always heard 6 months. I know it's not as long as the Army. My aunt was in the AF and the longest deployment was Korea for a year.

It does depend on your Job, some jobs do not require deployment, you might stay at one base for several years without a deployment. My Son works B-1's, He goes to Diego Garcia about once a year for 3 months.......Nuf Said
