This little gray female stray cat has been hanging around my yard and neighbourhood lately. I fed her usually every night but sometimes i dont see her for weeks. Last night she actually accepeted food form my hand! Now that i take as a sign of trust. I know she is a stray because whenever i have people over she gets scared and runs away. Tonight however after i finished feeding her she just turned her back on me and starting do whatever she pleases. Now a stray cat turning its back on you like your not even there, what does she think of me? Does she trust me? Does she think im its owner? Any ideas?

Cats are very independent, especially semi-feral cats. Right now, you're a source of food, probably not much more. And this is coming from a cat fan. If you want to adopt the pet, take things slowly, and the cat will more than likely always be an indoor/outdoor cat. When you feed it, try to pet it, but don't be too shocked if it recoils from you. Talk to it and make it more comfortable around you, it could take a long time.

She doesn't think anyone is her owner, because she doesn't think she needs an owner. Let's face it, all cats really own themselves, and it is a great honour to be accepted as the "companion biped" to a cat. At this stage, she is weighing the situation: independence or security? You can expect her to ponder that for quite some time before she allows the relationship to go beyond acceptance of food. Try buying her a few outdoor-resistant cat toys. Also have a brush and comb ready in case she finally lets you pet and groom her. Gradually, she may accept a relationship of mutual benefit, but only on her terms. You don't know what she has experienced previously at the hands of humans, and it might not all be pleasant, so let her set the pace.

LOL! It's normal, she's not saying anything about you personally. She's fed, now the next step is to find a quiet place and groom, that's what they do when they've eaten. She needs to relax to do that, and humans aren't part of that action for a cat, especially a stray.

We feed the ferals & strays here, they ALL do it. Once their stomachs are full they need to siesta and groom. She trusts you, you wouldn't have been able to get closer than 8 feet to her if she didn't.

Do you have a cat brush? Bring it out with you next time and brush her first if she'll let you, THEN offer the food. She'll still go off after eating, but the brushing will help make friends because you're grooming her.

well. I think she trusts you to an extent. She knows that she has a stable meal when she needs it. As for thinking you are her owner, probably not yet but she will. Give her some time. When she completely trust you and wants you to be her owner, you will know it!! She will WANT you to pet her and love her and she will come when you call her. Cats are funny. They are always in control.
