Why is the West so afraid to take a stand against Muslim extremists for fear of insulting Muslims?

Why does the Western World take the route of "Appeasement" in dealing with the Muslim problem? Appeasement doesn't work. Look where appeasement led Europe leading up to World War II.

As far as I'm concerned everyone is taking their stand openly against extremists including Muslims. But if you want the whole world to stop tolerating all Muslims in general... It's not going to happen. I know people are more kind hearted than to let that happen.

Look who's being appeased: Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, our supposed "allies." U.S. intelligence reports show that 45% of insurgents in Iraq are Saudis. And Bush says we're fighting the same people who attacked us on 9/11. He doesn't know it but he's right about that. Most of the hijackers were Saudis too. And Pakistan is protecting Bin Laden.

ON the larger question of appeasing the "Muslim problem," how do you take a stand on extremists? They're a small minority among mostly moderate Muslims. But when an outside force (the US) attacks this minority, the majority will turn against us. What do you want to do, blow 'em all up? Muslim extremism can only be controlled from within.

The answer is in your question. In the sense you are using it, Muslim is an adjective. It is used to describe the word "extremists". And that is the key to your answer. "The West" does not have a problem with Muslims. The problem is with people who blow things up - extremists. Extreme Christians blow-up abortion clinics. Extreme animal rights activists blow up science labs. And in Iraq, extreme Sunnis blow up Shiites, and extreme Shiites blow up Sunnis.
If you know Muslims personally, you probably do not hate them. You hate those "other" Muslims - the one that blow people up, or behead people, or shoot them.
When I think "Muslim", I think of the goofy guy who lived down the hall from me in my dorm in college, or the young woman working in the same biology lab as I was.

Regarding appeasment, if you look at the news, I personally do not interpret the West's approach to be over-all appeasing. Within the past year or so, a Dutch artist made an cartoon of Mohammed that Muslims found insulting; the French government used force to quell riots by jobless Muslim youths; American troops killed more Iraqi Muslims than vice versa, and the treatment of prisoners in the Abu Grahib prison was not "appeasing", either. And of course Israel hasn't yet given up it's right to exist; and France passed legislation making the head-gear Muslim women wear illegal in public schools.
Much of what you may see as appeasement I believe to be damage control. Hatred should not be directed at a group a people, just the specific individuals who are responsible for atrocities. Timothy McVeigh was arrested for blowing up a building in OKC, not his cousins and friends as well, though they may have shared his same religious beliefs.

I hear you. I believe that when the extremists try another 9/11, people will be FED UP! Hopefully Guiliani will be elected and things will be done right. AND we needed the Patriot Act and a Homeland Security a long time ago, while the Dems sat on their butts and took care of their lobbyists.

They should take a stand against all extremists regardless of religion. Making a religious distinction betweem the doers of evil crimes intends the crime itself is related to the religion and not the insane person themselves.

Fear. Plain and simple. Today's Christians are afraid of how the extremists will act. Especially since they are famous for putting "fatwas" on people who dare to disagree with their crazy way of thinking.

Other than a missguided aleagence to PC by the Left, one word OIL.. If they didn't sit on most of the worlds oil reserves they wouldn't amount to squat. We could either ignore them or swat them as a choice.... As it is the control over the life blood of the planet gives them undo leverage and importance that they couldn't achieve naturally and of their own efforts.
