I had an elderly cat with the same kind of thing as you described. Turned out to be cancer and a very expensive vet bill. I had to put him down about 2 months after he was diagnosed. I loved him is why I paid the vet bill. In hind sight I should have put him down sooner and saved myself several hundred dollars. And he would have suffered much less as well.

Take him to the vet. It could be very serious especially since he is so skinny. The weight loss and lack of normal appetite is a big indicator telling you that he is really sick and/or in a lot of pain. He needs to get meds from the vet for whatever is wrong. VET ASAP!!

is it hard or soft? my poor doggy had mammary cancer and they were really hard lumps just hanging. she had them for about a month or two and then started having shortness of breath constantly. we took her to a reasonably priced vet who said that the cancer had spread to her lungs. he prescribed Prednisone (which temporarily MAY reduce the size of the tumors) and she really perked up. all in all, we probably spent about 200 to 300 to get her meds and, later, to put her to sleep. we all had a good time with her before she died because we took her to the vet and had her medicated. but dogs and cats age sooooo fast that, if it is cancer, she may not last much longer. i didn't realize that a person's "1 year to live" with cancer is a dog's "two or three months." it makes sense now, though.
hope its just benign though!
good luck.

Only a trained professional and with a biopsy can the problem be diagnosed. Take your cat to the hospital. There is no way that you will find out on your own if it's malignant or benign.

VET. But if you are like me with no money, thats hard. I know what you would be going through. But I always say, that if my pet needs to see the vet, dont worry- no matter how little money I have- they will go. It sounds like cancer if hes older, or maybe a cyst. Good luck

The main question is "is he in pain"?
It could be anything, this is a vet's call, not ours. Don't wait to take him in, this calls for a diagnosis from someone with training.

You can't, so you should take him to the vet.
It could be something easily treatable that is making him lose weight. You owe it to him to at least find out what it is and what can be done for him,
