She found it on the side of the highway driving home from work. Her mom won't allow animals in her house, so I guess she thought I'd be a sucker for it.

The kitten has a broken leg, she is not using it at all.. she's infested with fleas (I treated the fleas) and has worms badly (I gave her dewormer). Right now I have her in a pet carrier with food and water.

Do you think the vet might discount this? I give them at least $1k/year for my animal care anyways. Also, do you think they'd help me find her a home?

I have $30 for 2 weeks. I could afford it if I didn't pay for an emergency vet bill of $230.

Sorry, but I don't think much of this vet at all! No vet can "feel" a break and know how bad it is - that is what x-ray machines are for. And based on her injury, the hip may have been dislocated or the pelvis fractured as well. I guess this vet has x-ray eyes? While cage rest is appropriate for a pelvic fracture, breaks of the lower limbs are almost always splinted, kitten or not. And the cat/kitten is kept pretty immobile in a big dog crate or kennel - not allowed to wander around a room. Metacam is used occasionally in cats - as a one time injection for post surgical pain! It is not intended - nor is it considered safe - for use more often than that. It is occasionally prescribed in an older cat for arthritis, but that's generally given every three-four days, and only over a two week or so time frame. Please stop giving it to your kitten immediately, there are other safe pain drugs that won't risk killing her. Take your kitten to another vet for a better evaluation. Personally, I'd never use that vet again.

Call and ask, and when one says no, keep calling. It sounds like you already have a relationship with a vet, so that makes it all the more likely they will help you out. Tell them the circumstances -- that the kitten was found by the side of the road by someone else who gave it to you. Perhaps you will get a Good Samaritan discount.

A broken leg will not necessarily be a big expense to have fixed. Some types of breaks will heal with nothing more than a splint and cage rest, but only the vet has the expertise to tell.

If you can't find a vet that can help you with a payment plan, try calling the humane society or animal shelter. You may have to sign the kitten over to them, but it will get the vet care it needs.

My guess is no. Vets have lots of costs and they can't afford charity cases - which show up every single day on their doorstep. But you have two choices - take it to the vet and get the leg taken care of (and soon - she is in pain and it may end up healing badly if not treated) or having it euthanized - either by the vet or the county shelter. Vets take credit cards - that may be the best payment plan you'll be able to come up with - or he may allow you to make payments under the circumstances. But a discount I doubt.

Call the vet and ask. Get the phone book out and call the other vets as well, some do discount work or free if it's a rescue animal, especially if you're on a tight budget.

Well you could always ask them. It wouldn't hurt, but I've never had a vet give me a discount on anything.
