This is the age old philosophy question that gives rise to the question "what is sound if there are no ears to hear it?" Rather like "what is cold without hot?"

Not really a botany question, despite involving a tree.

You could ask, 'Shall we define noise in terms of the vibration of molecules in the air (or other medium) or shall we define noise as something that happens in the cochlea and brain?'
I would personally wish to define noise as a physical phenomenon rather than a biological one, but that's just me (and most other people, I think).
This question has always been insulting to trees because it assumes that trees are not people and so are incapable of hearing themselves fall.
NewsFlash: There has been invented a device known as the 'tape-recorder'; a device which may be used to record sounds; mysteriously - to be played back later. This device has been used to answer an age old question - If a tree falls and no one is there to hear it, will there be a noise? This device was placed in the Peruvian rain forest besides a coconut tree with another device which chops down the tree. The tape recorder device was played back in the prestigious Albert Hall, indeed playing back the sounds that no one heard; the falling tree, thus resolving finally, once and for all the age old question.

Yes, obviously. How the hell could a tree fall without making noise?

Maybe if the tree was very small and landed on something very soft, it would make only a tiny sound. But any normal tree will make a tremendous crash.
