In terms of pure technique (i.e. finger dexterity, speed precision, and hand/finger indpendence) there is nothing that compares with the Hanon exercises.
You can often find them as three seperate books or a complete series.
All told there are 60 exercises. They get progressively more difficult as you move forward. They start off very simply, and progress until you have a great deal of hand independence.
Its important to note though, that this independence only comes if you use the fingerings printed in the books. It can also help with your sight reading.
If you want to work on specific techniques, sticatto, legato, etc, your best bet is to find simple pieces written to enhance that sort of playing. There are literally thousands. Any reputable music store (selling instruments and music) will be able to point you in the right direction.
Secondly finding a good teacher will help immensely, they will be able to pinpoint problem area's and help you to correct them. Oftentimes we as players are not even aware of our weak spots, and so when we practice, if we do so without at least nominal guidance, we can do more harm than good, because we end up practicing in ways that reinforce the bad habits we already have.

Start with 5-finger patterns, one hand at a time. Then hands together. Play it C, G, F Major to start. Then move on to a full octave in each key (proper fingering is available pretty much any good music store). The technique that is important in playing is to keep your fingertips strong vs. hyper extending them, and to keep your hand round as if you were holding a baseball. Look at the beginning of elementary piano books for a visual illustration (i.e. Faber and Faber).
Great question! It will take time to fully master this. So reward yourself for the progress that you do see in your playing.

My teacher gave me a Hanon book and it really helped me with my technique. Any technique book will help you, play through an excercise or two as a warm-up when you practice. Also, buy a book of scales and play them! They may seem boring but they really help you increase speed in any songs. When you have a technique/scale book, try to get the excercises faster and faster every time you play. And make sure you use the correct fingerings, because sometimes the same patterns you practice in technique books will appear in songs.
Hope this helps!

i have a good one for the 3rd 4th and 5th fingers. Start with the right hand middle finger on c and the left hand pinkie on c one octave lower. both hands in this pattern; cdedc 3 times then do cde(flat)dc 3 times then do cd(flat)e(flat)d(flat)c. then move up one half step and do the same thing. dont push too hard it is very straining. do this everyday and you 345 fingers will become significantly stronger

Get a teacher! The best you can find, even if you must travel. When they assess your strengths and weaknesses, THEY can choose etudes and exercises that will go right to the crux of your needs. Why waste time floundering? If you do not have them money, get a second part-time job - you will not be sorry!

a good piano teacher is very patient, all in all incredibly skilled. learning how to play the piano is very hard, so a teacher should have that trustworthy nature in her that does not make you shy to play the piano in front of her/him. she'll listen to every note you play, even how so badly you sound. she has a nature that does not make you think twice on asking things about the piano that are confusing you, or make you want to do your best without pressure.

Try getting Czerny (pronounced, CHER-nee) music exercises. They are pretty standard for improving technique. Should be available in a good music store or it could be ordered for you.
