Isn't Smoking a form of Suicide?

No more than eating high cholesterol food and not getting regular exercise while living in downtown Los Angeles with air that is supposed to be equivalent to smoking 7 cigarettes a day is a form of suicide.

Isn't Suicide against God's Law, guaranteeing the smoker a trip to Hell?

No, I can't find one verse in the Bible that says that a person cannot take their own life. There are several instances of people like King Saul and his armor bearer killing themselves and the Bible documents it without comment and moves on.

But, even if it was against one of God's laws no one is justified by keeping the law. We are justified by grace alone through faith alone in the finished work of Christ Jesus on the cross alone. That's what saves a person, not keeping the law.

Of course, if a person lives a lifestyle characterized by sin then it's doubtful that they have been born again by God's Holy Spirit. Jesus said that on the day of judgment many would come to Him saying "Lord, Lord, did we not....and then listing things that they did in His name". He said that since they didn't do the will of his Father He was going to tell them "I never knew you. Depart from me you workers of iniquity".

But since the Bible doesn't mention smoking and since lots of people who smoke don't die from it but die from some other cause, it is highly unlikely that God would spring a surprise on them at judgment day and say "Well sure, you trusted Jesus for your salvation and you loved me with all of your heart, soul mind and strength, and your neighbors as your self and served me all of your Christian life but you shouldn't have been smoking because it isn't good for your health so it's off to Hell with you, sorry about that - Bye".

Taking any human life is serious business.

Even if you are a soldier in combat, or you have the duty to complete the circuit at an electrocution, it is no laughing matter.

I definitely believe that smoking is a form of suicide, and that suicide is a serious offense, especially if the person is in full possession of his faculties.

I don't know whether it merits an express ticket to Hell. That's for God to decide, since He has all the facts and I don't.

It is a sin to do anything that can seriously harm our bodies, and this is not a stupid question. I smoke and am trying to stop. It is so hard because I have been smoking for years. It is a sin, and yes if you do it enough it can cause lung cancer, heart disease and other problems. Yes it is suicide. Anything I would imagine you do that can kill you, of course is self destructive. I am going to try harder to quit, and I am being stupid, because I am a cancer survivor. God might not be as good to me next time. I need to pray about this. Go to Hell, I would not take it that far. Just try and quit.

What an idiot question!

What do you consider God's law?? Do you mean 'sin' in general?????? If that's the case, then all of us are going to hell. Smoking IS stupid, but so are a lot of things, like your question but that's beside the point. Suicide doesn't automatically mean you go to hell. Think about it for a minute, ok?

i dont see how thats a form of suicide when your not smoking in hopes that you die. suicide would be something that your planning, or hoping. if thats the case then were trying to commit suicide over some foods, soda, and whatever else that is not good for your health. dont forget driving down the street would be form of suicide to. there is not to much in the world today that cant kill you.

Committing suicide is a sin and it is wrong but if that person is saved, he is going to heaven regardless. If a "saved" person is denied heaven(or rather a relationship with God) because he is has sinned, then I guess I won't be going because I am just as guilty as the next.

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

1. No one is good enough. "There is no one righteous, not even one;" - Romans 3:10 2. You are a sinner. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." - Romans 3:23 3. God loves us, even though we are sinners. "But God demonstrates His Love for us, in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8 4. The provision - God's Gift. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 6:23 "For it is by the grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9 5. There must be repentance of sin (turning away from sin). "Repent and believe the Good News!" - Mark 1:15 6. The required action - believe and confess. "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." - Romans 10:9-10 7. The result - Salvation. "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord WILL BE SAVED." - Romans 10:13 "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." - Acts 4:12

No, unless that's why you start. But that wouldn't be very efficient way to end your life. It is an addiction. A very potent one at that. It could be considered suicide if a person learns of the detriment to their life, and does nothing to try and stop.

No, not all people die from smoking just because they smoke. Quit looking for more ways to judge people. The world has enough of that already and its not your job, but Gods.

Guess driving counts as well. Ooo, and walking, since you could fall at any time and break your neck. That's suicide, since you chose to walk and take your life in your hands.

I have to admit, I thought I'd see something about thetruth.com on here.
