It's in the brain. More specifically, in the imagination.

Too many questions to answer in any systematic way. Your original question about whether the soul resides in the brain presents a dualist picture of the world. For there to be a soul there would have to be some place where the soul and the body connected and influenced each other. Rene Descartes thought that was the pituitary gland. Today few philosophers defend the dualist idea as, by definition, the spirit world and the physical world have no way to influence each other. If there is a soul, it doesn't reside in the body. The children's story "The Golden Compass" takes that interpretation literally as assumes that there are souls external to our bodies in the forms of small animals that we talk with. While a charming story it is no more supported by any evidence than any religious interpretation is. Today most philosophers are materialists, that is they reject the idea of a separate spirit world. If you insisted that there was a spirit world where there are things like souls, they would ask you to supply some evidence for that belief. Being called a "belief" is the kiss of death for truth. If you run across a dualist philosopher at some university, he or she is probably performing an act to determine if students can see through his play with worlds. One form of teaching. Those who can see, teach themselves. Those who cannot see wouldn't learn anything anyway.

A soul is an embodied spirit (a spirit housed within a body).

Before I was born, I was an unembodied spirit. I existed in spirit form as an individual, but I did not have a tangible physical body.

Since I have been born, but have not yet died, I am an embodied spirit, or a soul. My spirit is housed in a tangible physical body -- but not permanently.

Someday my spirit will vacate my body -- we call that "death." My vacant body will be disposed of (possibly by burial or cremation) and my spirit -- a disembodied spirit -- will wait for the resurrection.

Comes the resurrection, my body will be rebuilt better than before, and my spirit will move back in permanently. Once again I will be an embodied spirit, or a soul.

As an individual who practices Israelite Christianity my answer is not based on any Jewish or Christian religious concepts but is found in researching the original meaning
of biblical words. The word "soul" as it appears in scriptural or gospel text indicates a mortal or immortal sense of identity that controls the actions of the human body. (Matthew 10:28, 16:25-26)

The word "soul", translated from the Hebrew, means (abstract) vitality: used very widely in a lit., accommodated or fig. sense (bodily or mental)."

The word "soul", translated from the Greek, means "fig. a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by impl.) vital principle, mental disposition, etc."

Through researching biblical words, I have gained spiritual insight into scriptural and gospel prophecy regarding an immortal soul that governs a mortal body.

No. It's like a hologram. It does interface with the brain, but only in the way a projected movie interfaces with a screen. You can destroy the screen,or it just eventually falls apart, but hey,the show goes on.
