it deepens
when it is a tank with a metal track the it will leave some damage certainly when the vehicle makes a turn but when it is a track with rubber blocks on it then the damage will be a lot less to no damage at all.
The temperature will also play a roll on a hot summer day when the pavement is softer the damage will be more then on a cold wither day

Tank treads certainly do take a toll on asphalt, but so do wars. Tanks most often are used in war zones, which get pretty chewed up by other means besides tank treads. Direct hits from mortars, artillary, ied's, suicide bombings, they all take their toll !

Thats why they have rubber pads on the tracks they use at home, if the rubber wears out in a combat zone i dont think the locals will be complaining to much.

i am sure they do, i live on base and around the tank trails there are concrete slabs that run across the road and are labeled for tank crossing. i would imagine that this is to prevent damage to the asphalt

on thin roadways it will crack the road, on thicker "highway" roads it just leaves the trac marcks
