Starting a Bonsai from seeds has got to be the most gratifying way to create this living art. But you've got to be on your toes. I find it better to start several seed in a flat of peat moss. The power of numbers would be on your side since the strong will survive giving you a better specimen for future training. Plant these seeds at about 2 1/2 of their diameter in depth. You transplant them after their true leaves come out into a well draining soil. Traditional Japanese Bonsai soil is Akadama which is similar visually to broken terracotta clay but baked at a higher temperature. But you can mix your own.
the basic mix is 50% loam, 25% peat, 25% sand. The proportion depends on the type of tree ( yes they maybe small but they are trees, just small scale) you're growing.

I've been training bonsai for over 15 years. I suggest you get a couple of books as well.
