I woke up today and I realized that the skin between my thumb and pointer was in pain. Not only that, but (I work at McDonalds) when I was rolling papers up for a packet, I couldn't do it as flexible as I once can.

When I talked to my mom about it, she mentioned Carpal Tunnel. What is going on?

this very well could be the start of carpal tunnel syndrome. See your medical doctor for an examination.

For now soak your hands in hot water With 1c. of dissolved Epsom salts first thing in the morning and last thing at night. This will help relax the muscles. afterwards apply an analgesic cream.

Purchase a wrist support at any drug store and wear this when you work. It will support the muscles and decrease the pain. Use Advil capsules four times daily for pain relief.

One of the first signs of carpal tunnel is waking up with pain or numbness. Alleve, Motrin or aspirin - NSAIDs - can help with inflammation. If this continues, you can go in for tests. Simple tests you can try: touching your thumb to each finger on the hand. If you have carpal tunnel, this may be more difficult (or not possible). Also, put your arm out straight, palm side up, and bend at the wrist so your fingers are toward the ground. If your fingers are quickly numb, this is a sign. There are certain chiropracters that have great therapy, but even chineese balls will help strengthen and stretch those muscles. Good luck!

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common painful disorder of the wrist and hand, caused by compression ( pinching/squeezing) on the median nerve ( that's the name of it) that is between the carpal ligament ( the ligament doesn't stretch) and other structures within the carpal tunnel ( the area where this takes place). The is usually seen more in women ( although that is changing ), especially in pregnancy and postmenopausal women. Symptoms may result from trauma, constant repetition of the affected wrist ( IE: cashiers, typists, people use use computers quite frequently- men have been become more prone to develop this.) The compression of the median nerve causes weakness, pain with the thumb, and burning, tingling or aching. Pain may be intermittent( comes & goes ) or constant. Splinting of the affected wrist will alleviate some of the pain as this prevents motion of the wrist. For accurate diagnosis, please have this evaluated by your Doc. I hope that this helps!
