Okay so I was informed today that my soon to be mother in law doesn't like to speak english. I am a hispanic in nationality only, other than that i'm as white as they come! my fiance even calls me a redneck (no cruelty intended)! However last night he told me that when i meet his mother she will probably only speak to me in spanish. I don't understand spanish. I took four years of it and the extent of my spanish is still Yo quiero taco bell! is there a really good program for learning the language, or at least some way to fake it well enough that she doesn't make me look like a complete idiot. My guy loves his mother dearly, but he has no suggestions, only that i attempt to learn because she will do it even if he asks her not to. (gotta love mother in law's right?) Anyone have a similar situation? how did you handle it? What happens if i'm just too dense to learn another language? Any help would be appreciated!

she does speak english, it's mainly just a test. Pretty much she wants grand children that speak fluent spanish and in mexican cultures it's common for the wife to speak spanish as well. granted we are in america and she does know how to speak english she probably won't because it's her home and i'm the outsider. I've asked my hubby to be to talk to her about it, but pretty much whatever mama wants to do she will do. I just want to make sure she is okay with me so she will use english.

hey, i feel your pain. I am also hispanic but my parents never taught me spanish so i have always had a hard time communicating with my in laws. My mother in law only speaks spanish. She knows a little english but is embarressed to speak it because it isn't that great. So for a long time I was the black sheep at parties and gatherings because I couldn't communicate with anyone. I also took about 2yrs of spanish in high school but still to this day cannot really speak it I am much better at understanding it.
The first time you meet your in laws is always hard and it makes it even harder when you can't talk to them because of a language barrier. For a long time I had my husband stay by my side to translate for us because neither me nor my mother in law would try to communicate in each others language. That is not always the best way to go. I would suggest that your husband try to teach you the basics like hello, how are you, those kinds of things. As long as you attempt to speak to her in spanish I think she may see that you care enough to learn and she will do the same in return. Eventually as you and her learn more about each other the communication will come naturally. You both may feel comfortable enough to try to talk without an interpreter!!! It all will work itself out in the end just give it some time. Good Luck

Tell her that you don't speak spanish well and ask her to teach you her language so that she will feel more comfortable about speaking spanish around you. The worst she can say is no, but she'll probably say yes so that she can have the spanish-speaking daughter-in-law and grandkids. Take notes as you're learning with her, then make flashcards and notecards to stick onto the correct item (cervesa = beer, etc). It should help you.

My in-laws are Chinese. When I met my husband, they appreciated that I at least knew some courtesy words (hello, goodbye, please, thank you, good night). (I studied a book and tape set prior to meeting my husband).
Your intended should be able to teach you these courtesy words. The best way to learn the language is to get a Spanish-speaking friend. Ideally your husband should help you but if not, it would be a good way to get to know his sister or cousin or some other member of his family. You could take a community college class too. That would show her you're making the effort.

Isn't this an I love Lucy episode? Are you in the US? If so, our language is English, no matter what your nationality or race is. If you came to us for refuge, then you should have the common decency to speak our language. So I would suggest your soon to be husband teach his mother an English phrase and ask her to use it with you, and I suggest you learn a spanish one to use with her. Then I would just use the language you speak, and if she wants to be able to understand you, then she needs to learn. Eventually she will want to speak with her grandchildren. Don't let it be spanish.

Why would you feel like an idiot? You were born and raised here. She's the one that doesn't speak English. Also, he should stand up for you. My husband ran into a similar situation with his mom and he told her that if she tried to make me feel like an idiot that he would move us away from her and she would never see us. So she keeps her mouth shut. Make your man stand up for you!!! She should learn English if she is going to live in this country.

4 years of spanish and u can only say "Yo quiero taco bell"??? Thats embarrassing, and i bet the only reason you know how to say that, is because of the commercial, NOT because of your 4 years of spanish classes, pathetic. If you didn't learn spanish in a span of 4 years, what makes you think that you will learn it with some advice or by watching a TV show for a couple of days?? Estas bien bruta, pero nimodo ojala la suegra no sea tan brusca y mala onda como lo estoy siendo yo...te bañas, gringa pedorra!
