Well, I have a problem. I've only replaced strings on a classical guitar. I have followed instructions on how to replace strings on a steel string acoustic guitar so I'm sure I'm doing it right!

The ball end of the string simply won't go through the hole! It just doesn't fit but the strings that came with the guitar obviously did and they appear to be smaller. I was wondering if this is a common problem or if there is anything I possibly could be doing wrong.

These are the strings and the guitar :

That may be true on some guitars, but the picture clearly shows a peg system. You poke the ball end through the hole and then put the peg in so that the string lies along the little slot along the side of the peg. Try using the pegs to shove the balls down into place. If the Martin strings balls are too large, take them back to the shop and exchange them. Take the guitar, too, because they won't believe you if they don't see it for themselves.

Nightserf is correct. On an acoustic guitar, the ball goes through the hole from the top. The bridge pin has a groove on one side. Place the string inside the groove with the ball at the very tip and use that to push it through the hole. Be sure the groove on the pin is aligned to the groove in the hole (it should face toward the sound hole). Once it's through, pull firmly on the string. The ball will slide up along the side of the bridge pin and lock against the notch in the hole. The friction between the pin and the side of hole will hold the string in place. You can then attach the other end to the tuning peg.

It all depends on the use. If you play a few hours daily then normally the strings would need to be changed at least once per month. I play 4-6 hours daily so I change mine every few weeks. When I`m out gigging I usually change them between shows. Its all a matter of time and preference. I will tell you this though. If you plan to stick with this buy the strings in 3-paks because generally its more economical. Don`t buy 50 sets because I have done this and it never fails that the strings end up rusting in spots over time. I guess its because I travel with them in my gig bag alot and the temperature difference does something but anyway.... As for the damage....If you left the guitar stored with the strings tuned to standard for that long without using it you may need to adjust the bow in the neck. Other than that I think it will be just fine. Have fun and good luck.

I thought maybe the problem was that you were trying to put electric guitar strings on an acoustic. But I just checked and the ball end is the same size on my electric and acoustic strings. I compared Ernie Ball electric to D'addario acoustics. I think this might be standard. It has to fit. I usually put the ball end in the hole and then just insert the peg. Perhaps it is the Martin strings that have a bigger ball. I don't use those strings.

You don't put the ball end through the hole. You slide the string through the hole and the ball keeps it from going through. Put the string through underneath the hole.
I hope I'm being clear.
Let me know if I'm not please!
Nice looking guitar!
BTW, Elixir strings are better then Martin. Just my opinion!
