I had to expedite my passport in LA the day before my trip. My other passport that I submitted 3 months before came in the mail while I was on my trip, although it was supposed to be canceled. And I have been informed that if I don't return the canceled passport I could have problems the next time I use my good passport.

Take it to your passport office and tell them what happened. They will take it and destroy. Make sure you get some kind of a receipt for it so you will be protected if there is a foul up.
