I thought it was the first battle of Ypres, which would make more sense than the Marne. The Marne is in France, Ypres is in Belgium. Also the Queen went to Ypres for a memorial service last week, together with that amazing old gentleman from Brighton who was in the Royal Flying Corps in WW1 and is now the UK's oldest man. The Belgian King was also at that service.

The Second Battle of the Marne, or Battle of Reims, was a major World War I battle fought from July 15 to August 5, 1918, near the Marne River. It was the last major German offensive in the Western Front, and failed when an Allied counterattack led by French forces overwhelmed the Germans, inflicting severe casualties.

I believe it was to commemorate those who fell in the Second Battle of the Marne in World War One. That battle was fought in July of 1917, so the date seems appropriate.
