Everyone does it. I do it, you do it, whoevers reading this probably does it (and if they don't, they should). It's not cheating, it's keeping up with the competition.

it's not cheating if you think it's the best answer. it's happened to me that i wanted to vote for meself but saw someone else had a better answer :) so i deprived myself of the 10 points ;)

It makes sense at the lower levels, just to get yourself up to an answers limit that lets you participate as much as you like.
A lot of questions get abandoned by their Askers and ignored by voters, so those points are just sitting there unused anyway.
And . . . like everyone else in this thread . . . my answers usually ARE the best ones, lol. *G*
