i just read a question asking why christians cuss....most of the answers were "because everyone sins..." why are you saying cussing is a sin? aren't cuss words just words like every other word? any word can be demeaning if used with bad intentions....so why do christians claim cussing to be a sin?

I'm sure in many circles, breathing is a sin...

Or, if you're catholic, being alive is a sin.

People are ridiculous, they are just words... There are absolutely no conceptual differences between the words s--- and poop. They are exactly and precisely the same thing, the only difference is that there are separate standards and stigmas applied to each one.

For some reason describing an action/thing using one word is okay, but describing the exact same action/thing using a different word is "bad" or a sin... It's bizarre.

I'm a Christian. Cussing in the sense of using bad words is not a sin. BUT we are told that we should treat everyone with respect ("love your neighbor as yourself") so if we are being rude or malicious in anyway, including using words that others might be offended by, then that is sinful behavior. I used to cuss like a sailor, but now that I'm a Christian, I know that's not appropriate.

The Bible does say that we shouldn't use bad words and curse people and then try to bless people using the same mouth. It says "how can one stream have both sweet and bitter water?"

In reality the word Penelope is a sexual cuss word...yea yea, blue is red and red is really green. We use words to define and describe how we feel. The actually act of the word is the true sin. Like a "slut" for example. If I call a girl who has slept with 14 men in 3 hours a "slut". She is the mere sin in which i'm only trying to describe. Not my mouth.

the Bible tells us that words are never just a way to communicate ones opinions and feelings.... words have a spiritual consequence no matter who you are...

cussing is speaking negatively towards someone, or about something

speaking negatively is like a water spout that gushes forth sewer water... not only the area nearby but the spout itself gets covered with the sewage.

have you ever heard of the phrase, "dont spit into the wind"?... well

cussing is bad because it offends those around them... when a christian is supposed to do good to those around them... and it also defiles themselves
the harm done to oneself hinders and closes off the ability to pray and have faith when it comes to asking God for something needed, or wanted.

not cussing is Biblically a different kind of selfishness. like the scripture said, love your neighbor as yourself
.

I'm an atheist, but I agree.

That's one of the problems with "sin". Any fixed list of rules about what is right and wrong, especially really old ones, just don't cover most situations.

People concentrate too much on the words used, instead of what is said with them. I can give someone a great compliment using most of the "swear words" I know, and I can say the most vile things using just a first grader's vocabulary. However, it is much easier to just attack the words. That way, we don't have to think as much about what is said with them.

This is yet one more way that religion harms society.

"Let not a rotten saying not proceed out of your mouth" -Ephesians 4:29

"Let fornication and uncleanness of every sort or greediness not even be mentioned among you, just as it befits holy people;  neither shameful conduct nor foolish talking nor obscene jesting, things which are not becoming, but rather the giving of thanks" -Ephesians 5:3, 4

Foul language is disrepesctful to the hearer of it, it is disrespectul to the gift of speech that God has given us. It is unclean and foul in God's eyes.

"I tell you that every unprofitable saying that men speak, they will render an account concerning it on Judgment Day." -Matthew 12:36

I can answer this question. But I cannot post it here, because even Wikipedia has the words posted on it. The bottom line is that profanity is nothing but hateful words.

You can read the whole article, or just scroll down to: Profanity as blasphemy, scoff, curse and insult at deity

If swearing is a sin then all priests are going to hell lol...

I used to be an alter server when i was about 10 and the amount of times one of the priests opened a cabinet in the back before mass and had something fall out then yell "For F**KS SAKE! i have TOLD that useless cleaner to clear that sh*t away for the last f**king time!" or something as vulgar..

It is human nature, something happens that you dislike, your instant reaction is to backlash at it.

Sin by definition is anything that fall short of Gods glory. THe curse has attached to it meaning. the intent of it is to speak down belittle, show hatred. Weather we use it in fun or in all seriousness we have put forth something with a meaning that is not of God. thus it is sinfull

That is a very good question.

I am a Born Again Christian, and I try not to swear any more.
I try to live as God wants me to but I know this is a never
ending learning process. There is really no reason to swear.
The Bible is is a great teacher.
