I have a kitten that was the runt of the litter. The woman that gave her to me gave her when she had just turned 8 weeks and she said that she had to be with her mommy a little while longer than the other kittens. She gave away improperly weaned kittens!!! Anyhow, my little cutie is 4 months now and still very small. Do runts stay small or will she eventually have a growth spurt?

Cats grow during their first year of life, in two spurts. It's important that the first 4 months they get a good quality kitten food with about 35% protien to help build their bones and insides. The next 8 months they still need high protien food to regulate the other development of hormones and things. Keep yours on kitten food for the first year and the body will do all the growing it can. 30% protien is too low, keep with a higher number. With canned food the protien level should be 11% or higher (wet food is measured differently than dry).

She may be small all her life, but this gives her the best chance to grow.

Depends on the genetics of the parents. The mother of my boys is a petite little thing and the father is a bruiser. The runt of the litter is now bigger than the biggest of the litter in both height and weight.

I kind of wonder if they stay small their whole lives. One of my cats is the runt of her litter and she's not as big as other cats I've had. Most of the other cats I've had weighed anywhere from 10-13 lbs. The little one weighs anywhere from 5-8 lbs (she has pancreatitis, so when it flares up she loses weight). When she is healthy, she weighs around 8 lbs. Ask your vet for sure though...she may or may not stay little forever.

Your runt may remain small or she may become huge. It all depends on her diet and genetics. She still has plenty of room to grow and cats are known to go through growth spurts.

I have a pet cat that was the runt. In about 2 months, she got bigger and now she's alright. Your cat will probably have a growth spurt. =)

my cat was the runt of the litter and he stayed onthe small side.. but most of the time the cat will stay small for a while and then grow to normal size within the first year.

Good advice above. Make sure you give her lots of exercise too. Get a laser pointer and a cat teaser. This will help with her muscle development and keep her thin and healthy. She's probably gonna be the sweetest one :-)
