If you have a Trek 7100 can you change it to a mountain bike by just purchasing different components.

Definitely not. They will vary in a variety of ways, from geometry to material, to size. The biggest obstacle you will have in changing a road bike into a mountain bike is the fork size. You likely have a fork too small to fit a standard mountain tire.
Let road be road, and mountain be mountain. They were built the way they are for a reason.

Can you convert your bike into a Mt. Bike ? No. While your bike can handle light off road adventures it in no way is as sturdily built as a Mt. Bike. It has a really nice Trek Alpha Aluminum frame and it would be a shame to destroy it by shredding up the trails. Besides the head and seat tube angles are too steep for serious off road use and the fork has just 50mm of travel. The 700 x 35 tires are huge as far as road use goes but Mt. Bikers like to run tires that are more than 3/4 of an inch wider for the add traction and to protect their rims. There is just no way tires that wide would fit between the chain stays or fork . The gears on your bike are great for it's intended uses, but a 28 x 34 won't get you up very many of the hills you'll find on the trails. Stick to dirt roads and easy off road trails and your bike will do just fine.

No...the Geometry on some of them is very different. Like the Trek Session 7's and such. They are built for hucking and air. While you're bike is meant for the road.

Trek has different frames. About the different series of hardtails, they change the tubing.
