My husband (currently is deployed) called and is very upset. Re-enlistment comes in Feb and he says his present job isnt up for re-enlistment. He doesnt want to get out of the navy yet because currently i am a student (full-time) we have 2 kids and we live on base. My husband says he wants to get a degree b4 he gets out, and says his dream is to be a electrical engineer. right now he is a electrician mate and he loves it. Electricity is what he enjoys and says he doesnt want to switch jobs. What are his options? He wants to get a degree before getting out? And he wants to continue being involved in electricity while in the navy. We dont want to leave the area right now while i am in college, what can we do?

He needs to see what navy jobs they will allow him to retrain into.

He might want to see if he can retake the asvab again,

Because what jobs he can retrain into will still be based on his asvab score from when he first enlisted.

After he finds what jobs are available.

Then you two need to set down and decide if he really wants to retrain into one of those jobs.

Generally what happens is, his career field had a higher than normal reenlistment rate, and is over manned in his rank.

So he will have to retrain into a job, that has a shortage of people in his rank.

Depending on how close he is to getting his degree.

Now might be a good time, to retrain into a job that will give him more time for school.

Even if it is a job, he doesn't really want to do.

Just remember, after he has his degree, his options open up.

So he probally wouldn't be in the second job very long anyway.

if he is covered under PTS,then he has to put in paperwork to stay in past his first term of enlistment, and indicate whether or not he will be willing to cross rate. If he isn't willing to do so, they may deny him re enlisting if his rating is overmanned at his paygrade.

If he is NCS, he MUST go to the reserves for 24 months after his Active Duty Commitment, there is no getting around it.

His only other alternative is Blue To Green.

Would he consider switching branches? Maybe he could go into the Air Force doing that job. Either that or he is going to have to cross train into a different career field.

never heard of any branch not allowing someone to re-enlist because of their job, the only time that has happened is when their job is phased out and merged with another
