Just like real property is sold by deed, vehicles are sold by title. If you do not see a title at the time of sale, walk away from the deal immediately. The only exception to that rule would be buying through a legitimate dealer, but then only if you have been issued to temporary paper plate showing a transfer is in the works, and the sales receipt.

They could have sold it before the owner donated it and then the owner changed his mind. It could have turned out it wasn't a clean title. They could have found out it had been stolen and the title was phoney. It could have had a tax lien against it. It could have turned out it broke down before they could get it to you.

Since they want to refund the funds be grateful that for whatever reason they were honest and giving your money back. A friend of mine bought a lemon and it took the attorney general and almost a year in court and her's was a brand new car from a suppossed reputable Monte Carlo dealer. She got it replaced with a brand new one with a 10 yr. warranty free of charge but never did have to reimburse her for all the work done on it, days missed from work or the trauma of having the door swing open & her 9 yr. old daughter almost fall out.

She could've sued them in civil court but due to the time and expense involved she never did. So be grateful they are giving you a refund. If you asked what the problem was they'd probably tell you.

1 - they may not have had title to the vehicle in the first place so they could not transfer the title to you
2 - the title to the vehicle may be in question (previous ownership may not be clear)
3 - they can't get a hold of the title holder so they are unable to do the transfer.

I would not want a vehicle like that. Nothing but trouble.

If all else fails call the police and say your worried about where this car came from that you bought.

If the car has a Lost of Stolden title you will need to apply for one at your local DMV you will need proof of you buying it as well the VIN on the car. (most likly under the driverside window)
Make sure you keep all the paperwork.

Good luck.

I'd just take em to court if they didn't come up w/ the proper title I mean you can't own a car if it doesn't have a title thats free & clear.
