My Mom doen't like the clumping kind because it's hard to find poo and pee in his litter box. We use a paper shredder and my pictures (I draw a lot) to make the kitty litter and activated charcoal to control the odor. It works good enough.

HI there that sounds like a good idea for cat litter. I personally use the clumping litter for my cats and have no problem finding the clumps of poop or pee. I absolutely hate using the gavel litter it doens't clump at all and it makes it very hard to get anything other then poop logs out of the box. But if your cat likes the shredded paper for litter why not keep using it lol it's cheap lol have lots of peopl around to be shreaded. Best of luck to you and it shouldn't harm your cat at all.

Shredded paper is useless as litter. You're just going to end up with a stinky mess! You need something that will absorb the moisture and remove the urine odor.

Here's my reply to another post about litters:

What I use for my three cats AND my ferrets is wood stove pellets - they're AWESOME and SOOOO cheap! I buy a 40lb bag at my local grocery store for $4.99!! They're exactly the same product as the commercial pine cat litters like "Feline Pine" - but for about an EIGHTH of the price! They totally absorb the urine and eliminate all odor. When the pellets have all broken down to sawdust (about a week with three cats using two boxes) I dump the boxes and the sawdust dumps out dry - nothing clinging to the sides.

FYI - NOTHING eliminates cat poop odor - you need to scoop that out daily. Also, all the local cat shelters and ferrets shelters around here (WA) use the wood stove pellets - nothing beats them!

PS: I was at Lowe's tonight and they've just started carrying wood stove pellets - $3.99 for 40 lbs!

It'll be smellier if it's used, but if the cat is ok with it and you clean things out as it gets wet or pooped on, it's fine. I've heard of people using a paper shredder for the litter box filler. The only downside is if they track pieces of it through the house.

not the best solution to odor control but if you seem to have no problems with the paper then use it if you want to but if the litter starts stinking I would use special kitty cat litter it seems to absorb the the odor better than the fresh step, fresh step is really huge crystals and it smells horrible so the others tell me if you have any more problems

I don't see anything wrong with it, although odor control may be far from optimum, although paper litter products such as Yesterday's News claim good odor control. If you are using shredded paper from an environmental standpoint, good for you and if he likes it, then you are a winner.

mmmm....he doesnt really have a choice does he..... i recently discovered you can buy the black and white cheaper label of the absorbent litter ...it works gr8...all u do is scoop up the wee or poo poo as it forms into a clump.....it might be alot less messier than the shredded paper and less smelly too.....

i would suggest adding baking soda to the litter box prior to adding the paper to help prevent odor, but otherwise, it should work fine.
