My chiropractor told me to sleep with an ice pack on my hip for three nights. I tried it last night but only made it for about 20 minutes before I took it off.

It seems to me that the ice would melt before you'd get frostbite there, even if it were really close to your skin. After 20mins you should have gotten used to it. Place a wash cloth between the ice and your skin, that should help.

as long as you have something between your skin and the ice, you will not get frostbite on such a large area. If it were you toes or fingers I would advise against it. But the hip has enough circulation to prevent a problem.

no you can't. You might try wraping the ice pack in a towel to keep the hip cool but not so uncomfortable that you can't stand to keep the ice on.
