Moravians had a separate church by 1457 and the Lutherans were in 1517. I think why the Lutherans was there was not a reconciliation with Rome as there was with the Moravians or at least a section of them with Rome and therefore the Lutherans were not the first but had a greater split. If you look through the history of the Catholic Church , the first major split was with the Eastern churches in the great schism of the latr 11th century.

It depends on what you mean by "split". Dissident movements troubled the Church throughout its history, especially after Wycliffe. John Hus started his activities in the mid 15th Century, decades before Luther. But up to that time, dissidents (or would-be reformers) were simply treated as heretics who could ether recant or be excommunicated. They were an underground movement, not a denomination. Luther actually managed to sell the idea of an independent church no longer trying to reform the magisterium. This enabled the Moravians, Calvinists and Zwingliites to develop their churches without fear of being inevitably repressed.

So Hus was earlier, but Luther made it possible for them to survive.

Martin Luther was the first to split from the Catholic Church, hence the name Lutheran.

We have faith that we are all sinners and, via baptism, we are all saints. it is the basics in a nutshell Edit: There are 3 significant Lutheran communities, WELS, LCMS, and ELCA, going from maximum conservative to maximum liberal. word that for the time of user-friendly terms the ELCA helps women human beings to function ordained ministers. The LCMS will enable them to function Deaconesses and DCOs, yet no longer as ordained ministers.

My ex husbands version says Martin Luther was out first...he was taught the reason was so Germanic Catholics could stay out Saturday drinking beer and start church later in the day on Sunday.

He also says the dumbest thing the Baptists could do was give him a bible and then teach him how to read.
