I have treated every rat I have owned (about 50) with Ivermectin if I get new ones with lice. You can get it from your pet store or the local feed store that has medication for horses. It comes in a large tube, and unfortunately you will only use a few drops. Put some paste on a plate and mix it up then take a toothpick and put a small dab, a little bigger than the end of the toothpick, of the paste on the toothpick. Put the dab of paste onto some bread (about the size of a pea) and mush the bread and paste together. Give this to your rat 2 times a week apart. Also clean the cage with hot water and soap and any thing else in the cage, throw out any toys that are made of wood. Leave the cage out in the sun for awhile if you can, it works great at killing any little bugs that might be on the cage. Get new litter as well.

Check at the pet store for a flea/lice treatment for rodents.
If they don't have it, you can use cat flea powder. Put a TINY speck of cat flea powder onto the rat's back and brush it in. I have done this safely with a number of wild rodents that I captured and kept in captivity, so I know it works and is safe.

No! The insecticide can be very harmful to a baby animal, no matter what species. Take your friend to the vet and have them treat your baby. Good luck.
