I am a 24 year old soon to be "businessman". What kind of briefcase should someone such as myself have? It seems like the hard cased ones with the rolling locks on each side that you carry at your side are now out of style. People seem to be getting the soft leather ones that you carry over your shoulder. But common sense tells you that you can carry more stuff and it will be better protected in the harder one. PLEASE HELP!!

I have both. We received soft ones from the company with the logo on them. I find it is more versatile than the traditional ones. I don't know which you mean, because it is the soft ones that allows you to over stuff it. A hard one, once it is full you can't close it. And if it is heavy, the handle is hard and awkward. The leather one usually you can switch between using a comfortable soft shoulder strap and the soft handle.

The main practical feature of your hard square case is the locks. That will stop fellow office mates from snooping. But it doesn't stop a thief from stealing the whole thing and smashing it open. I tend not to worry about locking company paper stuff anyway. You may have a different view.

So then if none of that balances it one way or the other, then it is just about style. For my office, it is less formal and not as stuffy, and their isn't too much use of the hard cased ones.

I got a real nice one a couple years ago from wilsons leather for 200 bucks. I never used it because I went back to college and changed fields. its one of the hard black ones with the rolling locks. still got the tags on it and everything. plus it has a real nice leather strap to use with it.

i can put it on ebay if you are intersted. im sure there are more out there you can buy if you dont want mine. either way those soft ones will be out of style in a year but the classics never go out of style

The answer is always to look like the people you work with. See what they use and imitate. You don't want to stand out in the business world for your appearance.. just your performance.
